The Konstanz is a small single deck passenger ship of the Swiss shipping company Untersee und Rhein (URh) , which is used for excursions and charter traffic on the western Lake Constance between Kreuzlingen , Konstanz and the home port of Schaffhausen .

history

Constance has been in uninterrupted operation since July 2, 1925 . It is the oldest diesel motor ship on Lake Constance, the second smallest of 33 ships operated by the United Shipping Companies for Lake Constance and the Rhine (VSU) and one of a total of eleven ships named (City) Konstanz after 1840 , the largest city on Lake Constance. Until the 1950s, it was primarily used for scheduled traffic on the Untersee , after 1960 almost only for company trips. It has been a listed building since 2005 .

The Konstanz was built as hull number 223 by the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn . The steel shell was obtained from the Hitzler shipyard in Regensburg , as evidenced by shipyard documents at the Donau-Schiffahrts-Museum in Regensburg . In the shipyard list of the branch of the well-known Hitzler shipyard , Lauenburg / Elbe , it is noted that the (steel shell of the) Konstanz was built at Hitzler Regensburg and "dismantled, loaded, assembled on Lake Constance".

The Konstanz was built for the motorboat operation of the city of Konstanz , but was rented to the then Swiss steamboat company Untersee & Rhein, which later became URh, before it was commissioned in 1925. In 1936 the city of Konstanz took part in the URh and brought in Konstanz as a share of the business . Since then her home port has been Schaffhausen. During renovations in 1946/1947, 1960/1961 and after an accident in 1984, the appearance was slightly changed, the performance increased and the team halved. The load capacity was reduced from originally 140 people in local public transport to now only 60 people in excursion traffic, because the ship has become much more comfortable. The well-tended traditional ship , known by the population as the “ Konstanzerli ”, covered exactly 643,891 kilometers, but it is only used for excursions and charter trips on around 35 days a year. In the 2018 season, the Konstanz will also be marketed as a ship hotel with a double room. It is moored in the port of Schaffhausen for this purpose.
