Kostas Theodorou ( Greek Κώστας Θεοδώρου ; * 1965 ), also known as Dine Doneff , is a Macedonian musician ( double bass , guitar , percussion ) who is active in the field of world music as well as improvisation music and jazz .

Life

Theodorou was born in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1965 as the son of immigrants . In 1966, his family returned to their home region of Edessa in northern Greece . At the age of 15 he learned to play guitar himself . Three years later he moved to Thessaloniki and played in various folk and jazz groups . Theodorou then traveled for several years through Central and Western Europe, where he was able to gain a wide range of experiences in different musical styles and on different instruments.

In 1992 he returned to Greece where he put together his own band. An intensive activity as a studio musician and arranger began, which led to the participation on numerous albums in the period from 1994 to 2003. In 1999 Theodorou released his first own album Nostos , the first part of a trilogy which he continued in 2004 with the album Rousilvo (initially released in 2010). It is a contemporary Balkan folk opera, recorded live with a septet mixed with seven female voices and documentary sound recordings from the town of Rousilvo, where "Macedonian culture is only lived in secret", so that it slowly disappeared. As a “Requiem about Disappearance”, the album is a tribute to this now abandoned village near the border between Greece and North Macedonia .

Theodorou has been working regularly as a percussionist since 2002 with Savina Yannatou as a member of the Ensemble Primavera en Salonico . Since 2005, three albums for the ECM label have emerged from this cooperation . Furthermore, there was collaboration with Eleftheria Arvanitaki , Frank Köllges , Michalis Siganidis , Ara Dinkjian , Arto Tunçboyaciyan , Louis Sclavis , Michel Godard , Sainkho Namtchylak , Floros Floridis , Antonis Anissegos , Haig Yazdjian , Anja Lechner and Natalia Mann .

In 2011 he performed with his own quintet at Jazzahead . He also plays in Fragments of a Tale with Julian Hesse and Matthieu Bordenave .

The music of Kostas Theodorou has its roots in the Balkan-Eastern European folk music tradition.

With Maria Dafka he received the World Music Prize Förder-RUTH in 2018 .
