Emmanuel G. Kriaras ( Greek Εμμανουήλ Γ Κριαράς. * Nov. 15 . Jul / 28. November  1906 greg. In Piraeus ; † 22. August 2014 in Thessaloniki ) was a Greek scholar and lexicographer . He was one of the most important experts in the Greek vernacular ( Dimotiki ).

Life

Emmanuel Kriaras, the second son of Captain Georgios Kriaras, was born in 1906 in what was then the Athens suburb of Piraeus and grew up on the Cycladic island of Milos . In 1914 his family moved to Chania , Crete, where he completed his school education. In 1924 he began studying philology at the University of Athens with Ioannis Psycharis , which he completed in 1929. Kriaras then worked in the archives of the Academy of Athens from 1930 , where he rose to director in 1939. During this time he also went on study trips to Munich (1930) and Paris (1939, 1945–1948). Part of his studies concerned the early modern novel Erotokritos by Vitsentzos Kornaros , for which he published a series of source studies in an anthology in 1938 under the title Studies on the Sources of Erotokritos ( Greek Μελετήματα περί τας πηγράς του Ερωτυte . With this work he was awarded a PhD from the University of Athens. phil. PhD.

In 1950 Kriaras was appointed to the Chair of Medieval Greek Philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki . In addition to Greek Medieval studies, he also taught Greek history of the Middle Ages and modern Greek philology. In 1968 he was dismissed by the junta for political reasons . During this time he wrote his main work, the Lexicon of Central Greek Folk Literature 1100–1669 , which appeared in twelve volumes from 1968. In 1997 he handed over his documents and materials for this work to the Center for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki. Another well-known work by Kriaras is the monolingual New Greek Lexicon of Modern Popular Language , which appeared in 1995 and was widely used.

Kriaras dealt with the Middle and Modern Greek philology, lexicography and comparative grammar. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens (January 24, 2006) and the Golden Aristotle from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (April 4, 2006). On the occasion of his 105th birthday, the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki organized a Λεξικογραφικό Χαρμόσυνο in his honor on December 16, 2011. On this occasion, the linguist and philosopher Spiros A. Moschonas , the legal scholar Athanasios Kaisis and the philologist Ioannis Kazazis (editor of the Lexicon of Central Greek Folk Literature ) paid tribute to his life's work.

Kriaras was married to Ekaterini Striphtou (1909-2000) since 1936. He last lived in Thessaloniki.
