Krikor Bedros VIII. The Asdvadzadourian , also Gregor Petrus VIII. The Asdvadzadourian (* in Perkenik , † January 9, 1866 in Bzommar ), was the eighth Armenian Catholic Patriarchate of Cilicia . He went down in history as a great reformer and renewer of the Patriarchate of Armenia.

Life

Krikor The Asdvadzadourian was Regens of the seminary in Bzommar and later Patriarchal Vicar in the Patriarchate of Cilicia. He rejected the election of Patriarch of Cilicia twice. It was only at the express request of the Holy See that he was elected as the new Patriarch on July 17, 1843. Pope Gregory XVI confirmed his election as patriarch on January 25, 1844.

reconstruction

After the persecution of the Armenian Catholic Christians between 1829 and 1842, a period of reconstruction began for the patriarch, the repatriation of church owners and reorganization. During his term of office he founded new eparchies , had 15 churches built, built a house of priests and opened new schools. He revised the Patriarchal Constitution , published books, made several translations and expanded the Patriarchal Library.

Synod and Regent

In 1855 he called for the first synod of the Armenian Catholic Church in Bzommar and initiated a reform of the church , rituals and pastorals . He sought friendly cooperation with other Christian churches and with the rulers, and a close friendship developed with the Emir of Lebanon, Bashir Shihab II . Bedros VIII consecrated Paul Acderian as the first bishop of Iskanderiya in Egypt .

After the death of Bedros VIII on February 9, 1866, the seat of the Patriarch of Cilicia was moved from Bzommar in Jordan to Constantinople for ecclesiastical reasons .
