Shūhei Kuji ( Japanese 久 慈 修 平 , Kuji Shūhei ; born April 27, 1987 in Tomakomai , Hokkaidō ) is a Japanese ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Ōji Eagles from the Asia League Ice Hockey since 2016 .

Career

Shūhei Kuji began his career as a hockey player at Komazawa University , for whose ice hockey team he was active until 2005. In the 2005/06 season, the striker played for Komazawa Tomakomai before moving to the Waseda University team . After four years for the academics forge team, he moved to the Asia League Ice Hockey to the Ōji Eagles in 2010 , with whom he won the league in 2012 in the playoff finals against the Nikkō Ice Bucks . In 2013 and 2014 , the team again won the main round, but lost the final series against the Tōhoku Free Blades (2013) and the Nippon Paper Cranes (2014).

In August 2015, Kuji completed a trial training with the Eisbären Berlin and also played some games in the Champions Hockey League for them before he was signed (loaned) by the Eisbären in September. In 2016 he returned to the Ōji Eagles.

International

For Japan, Kuji has already participated in the U18 and U20 world championships. For the Japanese men's team , he was on the ice for the first time at the 2009 World Cup in Division I. Also at the 2012 World Championships when he was named to the tournament's all-star team, in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 when he was voted best player on his team, and in 2016 he was active for Japan in Division I. His 3-2 opening goal in the final game against the Hungarians in 2014 made the Japanese dream of returning to the top ten years after relegating from the top division. In the end, however, the game was lost 4-5 after a penalty shoot-out, so that Kuji's team only missed promotion when they were tied because they lost a direct comparison against Austria .

At the Winter Asian Games 2011 in Astana , he and his team won the silver medal. Six years later at the Winter Asian Games in Sapporo it was enough to win a bronze medal. He also took part in the Olympic qualification for the 2014 Games in Sochi in November 2012 . However, the Japanese failed in the first qualifying round despite their home advantage - the tournament was held in Nikko - by a 2-1 defeat in the decisive game against Great Britain . The qualifying tournament for the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang 2018 was also on the ice for the Japanese.
