description

Vegetative characteristics

Kunzea baxteri grows as a shrub and reaches heights of 1 to 4 meters.

Ganerative characteristics

Together with Kunzea pulchella , it is one of the two Kunzea species that develop red flowers. The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are fused at their base. The calyx rim consists of five pointed lobes. The five petals fall off after the flowering period. There are 26 to 30 stamens with red stamens in each flower . The anthers are two-sided, short and close fitting. The under constant ovary is fünffächrig and contains many ovules . The red stylus is thread-shaped and reaches the same length as the stamens.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Kunzea baxteri only covers the southern coastal strip of Western Australia between Esperance and Albany and the area south of Perth on the southwest coast. According to the preliminary division of Australia into biogeographic regions ( Interim Biogeographic Regionalization for Australia ), the occurrence of Kunzea baxteri falls on the regions Esperance Plains , Jarrah Forest , Mallee and Swan Coastal Plain . Kunzea baxteri grows influenced by sea air on sandy soils , granite - outcrops and granite hills.

use

Because of its conspicuous red flowers and the ease with which it can be reproduced, Kunzea baxteri is cultivated in parks and gardens in the Mediterranean climate and in greenhouses in cooler climates.

Taxonomy
