Kurt Engstler (born July 10, 1949 in Tschagguns , Vorarlberg ) is a former Austrian ski racer and trainer . In his special downhill discipline, he achieved three top 10 placements in the World Cup and twice won the downhill classification in the European Cup . After the end of his active career, he was, among other things, downhill and super-G trainer for men in the Austrian Ski Association .

Career

Engstler achieved his first successes at national level in 1967 when he became Austrian youth champion in downhill and combined . Three years later it was used for the first time in the World Cup in Voss in March 1970 , but initially had no noteworthy results at its starts at the highest level. After winning an FIS downhill in Pfronten and second place at the Austrian Championships in the winter of 1970/1971, he made his breakthrough in the newly introduced European Cup in the 1971/72 season . Engstler won two downhill runs in Thyon and secured victory in the downhill discipline classification. His best World Cup result that winter was a 24th place at the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel .

After his European Cup success, Engstler was able to catch up with the extended top in the World Cup in the following winter of 1972/73 . He won his first World Cup points with the sixth place on the Saslong in Val Gardena , which was also his best World Cup result, finished eighth in Grindelwald and seventh in St. Moritz , placing him 13th in the Downhill World Cup. Engstler could not repeat these results later. He therefore started again primarily in the European Cup, won the downhill classification for the second time in the 1974/75 season with five race victories and was second overall. In the winter of 1975/76, he again concentrated on the World Cup, but remained without World Cup points, whereupon he ended his active career in 1976.

In the same year Engstler started as a trainer at the English Ski Association before he switched to the Vorarlberg Ski Association as a youth coach in 1977. In 1991 he became the men's downhill and super-G group trainer in the Austrian Ski Association , taking care of the downhill skier Patrick Ortlieb , who was also from Vorarlberg . After working for the Vorarlberg Ski Association for a few more years, Engstler ended his coaching activity in 2002.
