Kurt Wessel (born May 21, 1908 in Magdeburg ; † November 7, 1976 in Munich ) was a German journalist .

Live and act

Kurt Wessel grew up in Breslau and began his journalistic career with the Breslauer Latest News . After the Second World War he worked from 1946 in Heidelberg for the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung under Theodor Heuss . After two further positions in Stuttgart , at the Stuttgarter Zeitung and the Deutsche Zeitung and Wirtschaftszeitung , he became deputy editor- in- chief at Münchner Merkur in 1961 . From 1963 to 1973 he was editor-in-chief of this subscription newspaper , to which a large number of so-called headers belong as regional newspapers and whose publisher also publishes the tabloid tz .

Wessel became known through his work in the radio and above all as one of the first discussion leaders in television , where he moderated, among other things, the domestic political discussion television series Unter Uns Said at Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) since 1959 . Since 1955 he has occasionally appeared as a political commentator on BR television .

Wessel was committed to his profession and was, among other things, chairman of the Baden-Württemberg journalists' association from 1958 to 1961 .

In 1973 he gave up his work as editor-in-chief of the Münchner Merkurs for health reasons.

After a long illness, Kurt Wessel died of a stroke in a Munich hospital .

Awards

Wessel received the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1965 . He was also awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.
