László Sárosi (born February 27, 1932 in Budapest ; † April 2, 2016 there ) was a Hungarian football player and coach . As an active player, playing exclusively for Vasas Budapest and also a participant in the soccer world championships in 1958 and 1962 , he later coached the Hungarian youth national team and at club level among others VSE Haladás , SC Volán and MTK Budapest .

Player career

Club career

László Sárosi was born on April 27, 1932 in the Hungarian capital Budapest and played for Vasas Budapest since his youth . Between 1949 and 1964, Sárosi finally played in the club's first league team. Together with actors like Dezső Bundzsák , Béla Kárpáti or Kálmán Mészöly , he was part of a kind of "golden generation" in the history of Vasas Budapest. Between 1957 and 1966, the club won five of its six Hungarian championships within nine years. Lászlo Sárosi was part of the Vasas Budapest team in all five title wins. The first championship title ever in the club's history came in 1957. That year, the Nemzeti Bajnokság finished in first place in the table with a one-point advantage over MTK Hungária FC . However, this season was to be seen as a transition season from being held in the calendar year to being held from summer to summer, so that only eleven season games were played and seventeen points were enough for the championship. The following year, Vasas only finished in fifth place. Even in the seasons 1958/59 and 1959/60 Vasas Budapest could not intervene in the championship race. In 1960/61, however, they were again champions of the first Hungarian football league. With four points ahead of Újpesti Dózsa they secured the second championship title in the club's history. This entitlement to participate in the European Cup of National Champions 1961/62 , but where they failed in the first round with 1: 5 after the return leg at Real Madrid . Starting the season as defending champion, Vasas Budapest was able to defend the championship in the 1961/62 season. Once again, Újpest was the first pursuer, this time the gap on the local rivals was only two points. Again Vasas qualified for the European Cup and this time reached the second round after a success over Fredrikstad FK from Norway , where they lost to the Dutch representative Feyenoord Rotterdam in the decider . It was not until 1965 that Vasas became a master again. In the 1965 season - the league mode was switched back to the calendar year - Ferencváros Budapest was left behind with three points. A year later the title could be defended, this time with a lead of seven points over Ferencváros. Since Vasas Budapest was denied participation in the 1965/66 European Cup , Lászlo Sárosi did not take part in the European Cup a third time. After the championship in 1966, it finally took until 1977 before the club was able to achieve its sixth and, to date, last championship title.

Lászlo Sárosi also won the Hungarian Football Cup once with his club. In the 1955 season, the first edition of the tournament in three years, Vasas defeated Budapest in the final Honvéd Budapest 3-2, which meant both the first ever victory in the Hungarian Cup and the first important title in the club's history for the club. Lászlo Sárosi played for Vasas Budapest until 1964, before ending his footballing career at the age of 32.

National team

Between 1956 and 1965 Lászlo Sárosi played a total of 46 international matches wearing the jersey of the Hungarian national football team . The defender did not succeed in scoring. Sárosi was part of the Hungarian national team after the lost final in Bern and thus during the phase of the creeping decline of Magyar football. Although he took part in two world championships, it was not a serious success. Sárosi experienced his first soccer world championship in 1958 in Sweden , where he was already an absolute regular in the team of coach Lajos Baróti , which was still peppered with some of the greats of the Golden Elf . However, as the reigning vice world champion, the end came after the preliminary round as third in the group behind Sweden and Wales and before Mexico . Four years later in Chile , Lászlo Sárosi was again in the Hungarian squad , was a regular and even served as captain at times. This time Hungary reached the quarter-finals as group winners ahead of England , Argentina and Bulgaria , where they finally lost to Czechoslovakia 0-1 and were eliminated. Another World Cup participation did not reach Lászlo Sárosi.

However, he took part with the Hungarian national team in the autumn of his career in the 1964 European Football Championship in Spain . After a semi-final defeat against the hosts, the Hungarian team won third place in the "small final" with a 3-1 win after extra time against Denmark . Lászlo Sárosi only played the semi-finals at the European Championship, while he was not used in the game for third place.

Coaching career

After the end of his career as an active football player, Lászlo Sárosi became a football coach, but did not work as successfully in this role as as a player. After a short stint at VSC Debrecen in 1968, Sárosi coached the youth of the Hungarian national football team between 1971 and 1974. From 1974 to 1979 he was responsible for the sporting successes at VSE Haladás . He held the class with the traditional elevator club for four years, but in 1979 he had to go to Nemzeti Bajnokság II , whereupon the coach and club parted ways after five years. Then Sárosi coached the SC Volán team for two years .

As a result, the coaching stations became shorter and at the same time less successful. Sárosi was the trainer of MTK Budapest from 1982 to 1983, briefly from Ferencváros Budapest in 1985, from 1987 to 1988 again at SC Volán and from 1990 to 1991 at his last station for a second time in Szombathely . From 1985 to 1986 he had his only foreign assignment with the Kuwaiti club Al-Nasr SC .
