history

In February 1983 Astrid Schmeling ( flute ), Michael Schröder ( guitar ) and Matthias Kaul ( percussion ) founded the ensemble L'ART POUR L'ART in Winsen (Luhe) . Kaul was previously a member of the Hinz und Kunst Ensemble, in which Schmeling and Schröder were occasionally guests. The first concert of the L'ART POUR L'ART ensemble took place on October 3, 1983 in the St. Johanniskirche in Hamburg. Political music in the situation of the Cold War against the stationing of medium-range missiles : Program “Pacem in terris - Poetry of Resistance”. In 1984 the series “The Hamburg Concerts” began in the Small Music Hall in Hamburg. First German presentation of the work of Silvestre Revueltas . In the early years, the core trio occasionally expanded to a chamber orchestra with 24 musicians in order to perform, in addition to Revueltas' music, some larger works by Hans Werner Henze (Voices, El Rey de Harlem, Miracle de la Rose, Kammermusik 58) and for the To record radio. L'ART POUR L'ART portrayed several composers for the first time in Germany ( Per Nørgård , Stefan Wolpe ). The reflection on the relationship between music and performance location led to staged concerts and, over the years, more and more to the presentation of music theater projects ("Relax" and "Kafkas Heidelbeeren" by Matthias Kaul, "Schattenhaft" from the composition class) as well as to outdoor projects such as the L 'ART POUR L'ART Music Box, Pyropoetic Park Music etc. In the following years there were EA's and UA's of works by Danish composers, country portraits of Denmark , England , France and Italy . First tours abroad were in Italy and France. This was followed by the beginning of the series of staged concerts of own works for children, which were discontinued after about 300 concerts due to oversaturation. At times there was close collaboration with the composers Vinko Globokar , Hans Werner Henze, Mauricio Kagel , Jo Kondo , Michael Maierhof , Helmut Oehring , Younghi Pagh-Paan , Frederic Rzewski , Manos Tsangaris , Isang Yun , Walter Zimmermann . Tours took place in Europe , later Asia and the USA , Canada , Russia . Visiting professorships were in Asia and North America . From 1994 onwards there was an increased occupation with American composers such as John Cage , Malcolm Goldstein , James Tenney , Lois Vierk , Christian Wolff and world premieres by Carla Bley and John Zorn . In 1997 the ensemble moved its headquarters from Hamburg to Lower Saxony due to a lack of support from the Hanseatic city . In the work domicile " Altes Forsthaus Habichtshorst " cultural activities started: a composition class for young people and children, which was noticed in German-speaking countries, a concert series with preliminary talks about listening in different professions, further training. The CD “made durable” with compositions by the young people was awarded an Echo Klassik , the annual award of the German record critics . The ensemble held festivals again and again, in Hamburg the festival “Fließende Grenzen”, in Lower Saxony the “ Musik 21 Nachwuchsfestival”, for the Saarländischer Rundfunk it curated “American Dreams”. Approx. 300 world premieres document the work of the L'ART POUR L'ART ensemble in contemporary culture.
