Lachenalia is a genus of plants in the subfamily Scilloideae of the Asparagaceae family . The botanical name of the genus honors Werner de Lachenal (1736–1800), a Swiss professor of botany from Basel .

description

They are bulbous plants that grow individually or in groups. The variable, sometimes spotted or transversely banded leaves stand upright or spread out horizontally.

The racemose inflorescences are erect and have broad, membrane-like, flower-bearing bracts . The inflorescence is upright, horizontal or nodding. The six, mostly colored, tepals are fused at the base and spread out in front or parallel. The inner tepals are sometimes longer than the outer ones. The six stamens are free. The stamens are stalk-round and can protrude over the flower cover. The ovary is egg-shaped.

The egg-shaped fruits form loculicidal capsules that contain the black and spherical seeds .

Distribution and systematics

The species of the genus Lachenalia are common in the winter rain areas of South Africa. The main ranges are the South African part of the Succulent Karoo , the Renosterveld and the Fynbos .

The first description of the genus by Johan Andreas Murray was published in 1784. He took up the generic name chosen by Joseph Franz von Jacquin . Type species of the genus is Lachenalia tricolor J.Jacq. The genus Lachenalia includes about 130 species:
