Lady Diana's wedding dress

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lady Diana's wedding dress is the dress that Lady Diana at her wedding to Charles, Prince of Wales , in on 29 July 1981 Paul's Cathedral St. wore. The ivory-colored silk taffeta robe has a train 7.62 meters long, the veil was 1.40 meters long. The value of the wedding dress was estimated at £ 151,000 (approx. € 80,202.44). It is one of the most famous dresses in the world and was one of the best-kept secrets in fashion history before the wedding.

design

The dress was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel . It should be a dress “that goes down in history on the one hand and Diana herself has to love it on the other”, a dress that “is so dramatic that it will be remembered”. Diana made a conscious decision in favor of these two designers . They had previously designed a chiffon blouse for an official photo series with Lord Snowdon at the engagement, which Diana really liked, as well as a strapless black evening dress, with which Diana had caused a sensation during the engagement period.

The silk taffeta was made by Stephen Walters from Suffolk . The Emanuels consulted Maureen Baker, who had designed Princess Anne's wedding dress in 1973 . One observer wrote: “The dress is a hoop skirt, it symbolizes sexuality and pomp, a meringue cake embroidered with pearls and sequins and the corset with ornate lace.” The robe is decorated with hand embroidery, sequins and 10,000 pearls, with a heart motif in the middle. An 18-carat gold horseshoe was embroidered on the petticoat as a sign of good luck. It is set with handcrafted Carrickmacross lace owned by Queen Mary . In comparison, Catherine Middelton's dress for the wedding to Prince William , Diana's eldest son, was only provided with machine-made embroidery based on moulin silk.

It was difficult to try on the dress because Diana had bulimia . She lost two dress sizes in the months leading up to the wedding. The seamstresses therefore did not know whether the dress would fit on the wedding day.

The 7,62 m long train posed additional problems. As author Andrew Morton wrote in the biography Diana: Her True Story , the designers were too late to take into account its length in relation to the glass carriage Diana and her father were supposed to take to the ceremony. It wasn't easy to get the train into the carriage, it was crushed during the journey. When Diana and her father arrived at the church, the dress and train were wrinkled. In case the design of her dress had leaked out before the wedding day, Diana had another model to replace.

influence

Diana's dress set a fashion trend after the wedding. Large puffed sleeves , pleated skirts and “soft fabrics” were in demand . Copies of the dress by other designers were on the market a few hours after the 1981 wedding.

Many experts saw the dress as the " gold standard " of wedding fashion in the years after the wedding. In the following years, however, the dress was not only praised. In 2004 a wedding magazine rated the dress as "too much dress, too little princess". Nevertheless, Elizabeth Emanuel repeatedly receives requests for copies of Diana's dress.

Diana's former butler Paul Burrell wrote in his 2003 biography that she wanted her dress to be part of the Victoria and Albert Museum fashion exhibition . After Diana's accidental death at the end of August 1997, it went to her brother Charles Spencer , who was to keep it until both sons, William and Harry , were 30 years old. Spencer had the dress displayed in the Diana: A Celebration exhibition, along with other legacies from his sister, for up to two months of the year it stayed at the Althorp family home . She has been seen in many countries outside the UK and raised more than £ 1 million for Diana's Diana Charity Foundation , Princess of Wales Memorial Fund . In 2014, Diana's brother's dress passed to her sons. The engagement ring was given to William and the wedding dress to Harry.

In 2018, the American magazine Time named the dress the "most influential British royal wedding dress of all time".
