The Lamme is a 22.4 km long, southern and left tributary of the Innerste . It flows through Bad Salzdetfurth in the Hildesheim district in southern Lower Saxony .

The river name is not derived from the animal lamb , but seems to have an Indo-European origin with the word part Lam . It means swamp, break or swampy meadow.

The lamb rises north of the lifter . Its source is in Lamspringe in the monastery park at around 200  m above sea level. NHN . Its water flows from a walled spring grotto , which, according to an inscription, dates from 1727 and was renovated in 1970. The source is about 200 m from the Lamspringe monastery . It was of great importance for the economy of the monastery. The water was used to supply drinking water and powered a water mill. The spring water comes from the siphon and looks slightly milky because of the washed out lime.

The predominantly northward-flowing Lamme runs from Lamspringe to Neuhof , passing through the Harplage mountain ranges in the east and Niedernberge in the west; on the slope of the latter, about 1 km from the river, is the Neuhofer district of Wöllersheim . Then the Lamme flows between the Bockenem districts Groß Ilde in the east and Klein Ilde in the west and then passes the Bültum, which also belongs to Bockenem, in the east and the Bad Salzdetfurth district of Bodenburg in the west.

After flowing through the Bad Salzdetfurth district of Wehrstedt , the longest tributary of the Lamme joins the Riehe flowing in from the south , from where the Lammetalbahn runs parallel to the river. In the Bad Salzdetfurth core city, which flows directly through it and which flows into the Klusbach from the west , the river meanders between the Saubergen in the east and the Hildesheim forest in the west. Shortly afterwards, the Gehlenbach , last coming from the northwest, joins the Detfurth district , and after the Büntebach flowing in from the southeast, the Lamme runs through the Wesseln district .

Between Wesseln and the shortly thereafter Bad Salzdetfurth district of Klein Düngen , the Lamme is accompanied not only by the Lammetalbahn but also by the federal road 243 that crosses the river . Shortly after Klein Düngen, after crossing under the Hildesheim – Goslar railway line , it flows below the Heinder Weir into the Innerste Leine inflow from the east .

Flood

Bad Salzdetfurth has been hit by floods several times:

A particularly devastating flood occurred on May 27, 1738, when 178 buildings in Bad Salzdetfurth were destroyed by the floods and 7 bridges or footbridges were torn away. At the St. George's Church in Bad Salzdetfurth, a high water mark at a height of 3 m above the pavement reminds of the water level of this catastrophe.

Another devastating flood, which killed seven and left 130 people homeless by destroying 25 houses, struck the city on June 29, 1814.

It was not until 1951 that the danger of flooding in Bad Salzdetfurth was averted by widening and straightening the river bed of the Lamme in the north of the city on Gartenstrasse.
