The Lance is a former research vessel of the Norwegian Polar Institute .

history

The ship was built under hull number 64 at the Norwegian shipyard Sterkoder mek. Verksted built as a fishing vessel . The construction contract was signed in November 1976. The keel-laying of the ship took place in August 1977, the launch in December 1977. The ship was completed in July 1978.

It soon turned out that the ship was too big and too expensive to operate. In 1981 it was sold to the Norwegian Hydrographic Institute and converted into a research and survey ship. In 1992, the ship was rebuilt again to meet the requirements of research trips to the polar regions. In 1994 it went to the Norwegian Polar Institute. From 1995 to 2000 it was also used temporarily by the Norwegian Coast Guard in the Barents Sea .

In October 2017 the ship was decommissioned and later sold to Besi in Tromsø , which continues to use it for research.

The ship was managed by Northshore in Tromsø.

Technical specifications

The drive of the ship by an MaK - diesel engine (type: 9MU AK 453) connected via a reduction gear to a variable pitch propeller acts. Two generators driven by MWM diesel engines (type: TBD 601-6K) and an emergency generator are available for generating electricity.

The ship is equipped with a bow and a stern thruster . The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice ( ice class 1A).

The range of the ship is given as 14,000  nautical miles at 13  knots and 21,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. The ship can stay at sea for up to 85 days.

Furnishing

The ship has a total of five laboratories or rooms for research, including two wet laboratories (11 and 14 m², a total of 71 m² are available). These are mainly housed in the bow area above the main deck. A 20-foot laboratory container can be carried to expand the laboratory capacity. A large part of the chambers for the crew and scientists as well as various lounge and storage rooms are located on the main deck. The deck superstructures are located in the rear of the ship above the main deck. Between the bow area and the deckhouse there is an open working deck with two hatches through which two holds (395 and 220 m³) can be reached.

For the two hatches and the working deck, there is a loading boom with a 16-meter extension that can be 10 tons. There are also two small cranes that can lift 1.8 tons each. An A-frame and winches are installed on the port side , with the help of which research equipment can be deployed and retrieved. The ship is equipped with sonar and echo sounder systems for research.

There is a mast with a weather-protected crow's nest in front of the working deck . Behind the deckhouse is a 13.5 × 11.5 meter helicopter landing deck for small and medium-sized helicopters. The helicopter landing deck is approved for helicopters up to 8 t. A helicopter can be carried on board , which can also be parked on the deckhouse directly adjacent to the helicopter landing deck.

There is space for 38 people on board. Of these, 25 places are available for scientists, 13 places are allocated to the crew (the crew strength is 10 people in normal operation).
