A total of 56 seats

The state elections in Lower Austria in 1988 took place on October 16. A total of six parties tried to win the 56 seats in the Lower Austrian state parliament . The ÖVP , SPÖ , FPÖ , the Greens as The Green Alternative - Greens in Parliament as well as the KPÖ ran in all 21 constituencies. The ÖVP lost almost seven percent of the votes, but emerged victorious in the election and achieved an absolute majority of the seats. The SPÖ also lost significantly. The losses of the two major parties benefited the FPÖ in particular, which more than quintupled its share of the vote from 1983 and moved into the Lower Austrian state parliament for the first time.
