1959

A total of 56 seats

The state election in Lower Austria in 1959 took place on May 10th, together with the National Council election in 1959 . There were two ballot papers: a white one for the National Council and a yellow one for the Landtag. While the KPÖ left the state parliament, the ÖVP and SPÖ were able to make profits. The ÖVP achieved an absolute majority in the state parliament with 31 of the 56 mandates.

Acceding parties and constituencies

Four parties ran for election in Lower Austria:

The KPÖ stood in this election as “communists and left-wing socialists”. The FPÖ had only been founded three years earlier, and most of the party members came from the electoral party of the Independent (WdU). As in the last state elections, four electoral districts were elected.
