Election to the National Council in Austria in 1959
The National Council election on May 10, 1959 was the ninth in the history of Austria . The party with the strongest votes was the SPÖ under Bruno Pittermann . In second place came the ÖVP under Chancellor Julius Raab , which, however, got one more mandate than the SPÖ due to the arithmetic of the elections. The FPÖ under the former SS- Obersturmführer Friedrich Peter was able to gain votes and mandates, while the KPÖ was unable to achieve a basic mandate for the first time.
4,696,603 people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 92.90 percent (1956: 94.31 percent).

consequences
The grand coalition of ÖVP and SPÖ was continued. The ÖVP was allowed to continue to provide the Federal Chancellor with Julius Raab , but the SPÖ, which provided the Vice Chancellor with Bruno Pittermann, also received the Foreign Ministry . The federal government of Raab III began its work on July 16, 1959. The Raab IV federal government followed on November 3, 1960, and the Gorbach I federal government took over on April 11, 1961 .
