Latin Patriarchate of Alexandria

The Latin Patriarchate of Alexandria was founded in 1215 under Pope Innocent III. established as a titular patriarchate . The patriarchal basilica in Rome assigned to him is Saint Paul Outside the Walls . The title Patriarch of Alexandria symbolized the claim of the Roman Catholic Church to this traditional patriarchal seat of the East . The titles of the Latin Patriarchs were, with the exception of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 1964 in the course of the Second Vatican Council and on the basis of a between Pope Paul VI. and the agreement made by the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople Athinagoras . The Titular Latin Patriarchate of Alexandria has not been occupied since 1954.
