She trained in mountain running and half marathons and was a ski instructor. Zimmermann completed her law studies in Paris and Bern with a master’s degree. In 2018 she left the university and started as a project manager for campaigns at the communications agency Rod .

politics

Laura Zimmermann was politicized as an opponent of the SVP's minaret initiative , which enforced a ban on the construction of minarets in Switzerland in 2009. Zimmermann sees himself as progressive, europhile and liberal in the tradition of John Stuart Mill . In 2016, she became co-president of Operation Libero , a student movement that was founded in 2014 as a reaction to the defeat against the “Initiative against mass immigration” of the right-wing populist SVP . In a debate with SVP strategy chief Christoph Blocher, she provoked with the demand that the SVP should finally start its announced initiative against the free movement of persons so that Switzerland could clarify its relationship with Europe.

Zimmermann led the Operation Libero campaign against the No Billag initiative , which wanted to abolish radio and television fees and which failed with over 70% no votes and in all cantons. Zimmermann relied on online warriors , on volunteers who argued for a no on social media . Afterwards she campaigned against the self-determination initiative , whereby her argument focused on the fact that if she said yes, Switzerland would become a contract breaker. With 66% no votes, the SVP initiative clearly failed.

Zimmermann's appearances in TV formats, for example in the arena voting debate , led to newspaper titles such as “The Face of Resistance”. L'illustré attested her “extraordinary persuasiveness and unparalleled political talent” , while the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that Zimmermann was one of the “most prominent opponents of the Swiss right”. Shortly before the elections in Switzerland in autumn 2019, an argument with Sascha Lobo was published in DIE ZEIT .
