From 1890 to 1895 he worked as a teacher in Kaster , from 1896 to 1900 at a community school in Cologne and from 1900 as a middle school teacher .

In addition to his work as a teacher, Kiesgen began to publish literary texts early on. He was involved in the struggle of the Catholic Church against so-called " trash literature " and was editor-in-chief of the magazine Der Wächter for youth publications from 1910 to 1920 . In July 1943 Kiesgen's apartment in Cologne was destroyed in an air raid. The author stayed temporarily with his children in Stuttgart ; after his return to Cologne he was bombed again in October 1944 and moved to Dattenfeld / Sieg , where he lived until his death.

Laurenz Kiesgen was the author of stories , fairy tales , literary-historical and literary-pedagogical treatises, poems and plays ; he wrote partly in Cologne dialect .
