Lava is a computer-animated short film by Pixar . It was directed by James Ford Murphy , who also wrote the script. The film premiered on June 14, 2014 at the Hiroshima Kokusai Animation Festival and was released in cinemas on June 19, 2015 as a supporting film for Pixar's Everything is Upside down .

The film depicts the love story between two volcanoes that has spanned millions of years and is told in the form of a love song. Murphy wrote the song himself.

action

On a lonely island in the Pacific, a volcano follows the love life of the animals living there and wants nothing more than to be happy with a partner. So he sings his song every day while he spits his lava and gradually sinks into the sea. Little does he suspect that a female volcano rests beneath the surface of the sea, which is moved by his song and has fallen in love with him. When she draws her strength and appears as a new island with an eruption, however, she cannot see the lonely volcano because it is behind her. In his last breath, he finally sinks into the sea and mourns his beloved. However, the female volcano remembers the song and begins to sing it herself. Then the lonely volcano erupts again and is finally united with her, so that they can sing their song together.

reception

Nicholas Garrett gave the film a positive review, saying it was one of the most touching and subtle short films made by Pixar. Oliver Lyttelton judged the film to be "beautiful". Pat Mullen gave 3½ out of 5 stars and praised the “fantastic optics” as well as the “continuous creativity and artistry”. Nelson Rivera emphasized the musical aspect, as music is able to evoke pure emotions, which the film would effectively demonstrate.

Pablo Ruiz, on the other hand, gave the film a negative rating. He described the story as "boring" and argued that there was no character development, no suspense, no plot; things would just "happen". Michael Colan rated Lava as one of Pixar's weakest short films and criticized the script above all: too much was explained and too little was shown. Nevertheless, he praised the “outstanding animation” and the basic idea of the story.

single

The song in the film, also titled Lava , was released on June 16, 2015 as a download single and as a bonus track on the soundtrack of Everything Stands Up .
