Location of Laxten in Lower Saxony

With around 7,600 inhabitants, Laxten is the largest district of the large independent town of Lingen in Emsland .

Surname

The name Laxten is probably made up of the words lake (swamp, swampy meadow) and stae (place, place), which would then mean dwelling on the lake (Lake-stae). This obviously meant the swampy, water-rich area between Baccum and Lingen .

history

The place name Laxten is first mentioned in 1490. At that time a "Swaneke to Laxten" was married to Biene. Other documents or files that could have given older references to Laxten were lost in the fire in the city of Lingen in 1548.

The lowland area between Altenlingen and Baccum was only very sparsely populated 1000 years ago. There were at most three farms: Böhmer, Lübbers and ten Enenhuis. In the 12th century, five Kottenhöfe were built near the full heir Lübbers on the edge of the Laxtener Esch . In the 15./16. In the 19th century, eight more farms were added.

In 1549 Laxten was first referred to as a peasantry and at that time belonged to the parish of Lingen together with Altenlingen, Biene , Holthausen and Estringen . At that time, 21 farms belonged to the Laxten farming community, as can be seen from the oldest list of goods and taxes in the county of Lingen from 1555. Most of the farms were around the Laxtener Esch, which was bordered to the north by today's Hüsinger Straße. The farms that belong to Brockhausen and Brögbern today were an exception .

At the end of the 17th century, a new development began with the creation of hiring posts. The heuerlings had no real estate. They received apartments and leased land from the farmers. In return, they had to be available as a day laborer if required . Since almost every farm had several such wages, the population grew and with it the need for pasture land, so that the grazing rights in Ochsenbruch in 1630 and 1633 became the subject of legal disputes between Laxten farmers and Lingen citizens.

In the 17th century, many hired people and small farmers, the so-called Holland - goers , had to go to Holland as seasonal workers for weeks or months to mow grass or cut peat . The livelihood could also be improved as a day wage worker and with haulage services for the citizens of Lingen. The location on the national roads also helped the people. If the hired men managed to acquire a house and land, they became new farmers. At the end of the 18th century, Thien, Jansing, Funcke, Schlichtermann, Claassen, Jaske and Niehoff became new farmers. In 1887 Laxten became the most populous peasantry in the parish of Lingen with 58 families, including 35 hireling families.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the farmers became the independent municipality of Laxten. Although many Laxteners were employed as railroad workers, they were still considered to be heuerlings because most of them had a large garden, kept pigs and goats and grew rye and potatoes on a piece of leased land. Laxten remained a rural community, even if there were more working-class than peasant families on the electoral roll of 1918/19.

In 1935, construction began on St. Joseph's Church on a plot of land bought by the new farmer Claas , which was consecrated on March 7, 1937.

Also in 1935, the Laxten fire station was built behind the Heinrich Klaas restaurant. After the tower was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt without a tower, it served as a workshop. Today it is a storage room; Until recently it was the shooting range for plaques, cups and kings at the Laxtener Schützenfest .

In 1950, areas around the Böhmerhof were swapped with areas around Kiesbergstrasse between the city of Lingen and the municipality of Laxten, so that the current form of Laxten was created.

The Laxten population remained stable for a long time. Their number was around 1,300 inhabitants around 1939. After the Second World War, many areas previously used for agriculture were converted into residential areas, primarily to give refugees and homeless people the opportunity to settle. First the residential areas at Kiesberg, Kuhlhof and sports field were built. The number of inhabitants rose to around 2000 by 1960. The areas “Auf der Los” and “Westlich der Kiesbergstrasse” followed later. From 1968 the Gauerbach was added as a residential area, which has since been expanded further with section IV. The community voluntarily joined the city of Lingen in 1970.

In the center of Laxten, new residential units were added with the building areas “Am Brunnenpark”, “Am Strootbach”, “Between Strootstrasse and Schwedenschanze”, “Hoogenhook” and others, so that in 2001 Laxten had around 7087 inhabitants.
