Le Roman de Werther is a French film adaptation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther , which the German exile director Max Ophüls directed in France in 1938. Pierre Richard-Willm took on the title role .

action

The story adheres closely to the Goethe model:

Early 19th century. Werther, a sensitive young man, fell madly in love with Charlotte. This is the fiancée of Werther's best friend Albert. As much as Werther tries to help the young woman, she cannot decide for him and rejects Werther. Deeply saddened, the latter withdraws and tries to find consolation and oblivion in the self-chosen retreat. Werther, who earns his living as a court assessor, cannot forget his beloved, even after she married her fiancé Albert. His further efforts remain without hope and response, even if Charlotte vacillates emotionally between her husband and the devoted Werther. But because of the conventions prevailing at the time, she did not have the resolve to leave Albert and fully engage with Werther, she left everything as it is. Werther then sees no other solution and takes his own life with a revolver.

Production notes

Werther was filmed in Alsace (outdoor shots in Reichenweier and Ammerschweier ) and in Paris (studio shots ) and celebrated its premiere on December 14, 1938. In Germany, Ophüls ' production was never shown in dubbing, despite this originally German material. The film premiered on August 9, 1994 in the third channel of WDR television as the original with subtitles.

Eugène Lourié created the film structures, Annette Sarradin created the costumes. Jacqueline Audry was one of two assistant directors of the Saarland native.

criticism

The film received little attention and is not exactly considered to be Ophüls' main work . According to his own statement, the director himself should not have known how to properly deal with the legendary Goethe subject.

The Lexicon of the International Film wrote: “The romantic story based on Goethe's novel is staged with perfect taste, at the same time poetic and tender, pathetic and delicate. With 'Werther' the director drew the impressionistic effect of his film for the first time not from the artificial studio buildings, but from the charm of the natural landscape of the Upper Rhine. "
