geography
Riquewihr is located at the foot of the Vosges , about twelve kilometers north-north-west of Colmar . The municipality of Riquewihr is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .
history
In the 8th century a Franconian named Richo founded an estate called Richo villa , from which the place and its name developed. In the 10th to 11th centuries, the place with the associated manor passed from the property of the Counts of Egisheim -Dabo (also Dagsburg ) to the Counts of Horbourg . These surrounded the place in 1291 with a first fortress wall. In 1320 Riquewihr received city rights. In 1324 Reichenweier was sold to Count Ulrich von Württemberg . In 1397, Count Eberhard IV of Württemberg became engaged to Henriette von Montfaucon , whom he married in 1407. Henriette was the heir to the Count of Montbéliard . From this point on, it belonged to the Württemberg-Mömpelgard counties on the left bank of the Rhine. In 1495 the county was elevated to a duchy. In 1534, Duke Georg von Württemberg allowed the introduction of the Zwingli- inspired religious reform to the Reformed Church . In 1559, Duke Christoph von Württemberg introduced Luther's teachings in order to secure a religious unity on his property on the banks of the Rhine. The Reichenweier rule included the following places: Altweier, Beblenheim, Bilstein Castle, Hunaweier, Mittelweier, Ostheim and Reichenweier. The Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648 hit the place as well as others in the war zone hard. In 1680 Riquewihr came under the power of Louis XIV , although it remained in the possession of Württemberg. In 1789, during the French Revolution , the citizens of Riquewihr joined the French Republic, in 1796 the Württemberg people were excluded in the Peace of Campo Formio and Riquewihr was annexed to France. From 1871 to 1918 the place belonged as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace , then back to France, 1940–1944 it was annexed by Germany. After 1945 the wine town developed into a magnet for tourists. The majority of the population is still Lutheran today .
On New Year's Day 2014, several historic half-timbered houses burned down in the medieval town center.
