Le Teilleul is a village and a former French commune with 1,189 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Manche department in the region of Normandy . It belonged to the canton of Le Mortainais in the Arrondissement of Avranches .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Le Teilleul , Ferrières , Heussé , Husson and Sainte-Marie-du-Bois were merged to form Commune nouvelle Le Teilleul of the same name . The former municipalities have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Le Teilleul.

geography

Le Teilleul is located in the south of the Manche department in the Pays de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel (area of ​​the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel ), 74 kilometers northeast of Rennes and 31 kilometers northeast of Fougères . In the vicinity are the hamlets of Cour de Houessey and Courteille and the pond Étang de Morette . Le Teilleul is surrounded by pastures and fields, which have typical field boundaries of the Bocage .

history

The place name is derived from the French word tilleul , which means " linden tree ".

In 1793 Le Teilleul received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

Le Teilleul had the most inhabitants in 1861, after which the population decreased continuously.

Attractions

The Saint-Patrice church was completed in 1854 based on a plan from 1851. It is designed in the Nine Norman style . In 2006 the building was entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques (historical monuments). In the church there is a baptismal font from the 15th or 16th century. It is made of granite and wood and was classified as a Monument historique in 1975.
