The Bobingen – Landsberg am Lech railway line (also called Lechfeldbahn or Lechtalbahn ) is a branch line in Swabia and Upper Bavaria .

The Bobingen – Kaufering railway line, which has existed since 1877, is a 22.6-kilometer single-track connection between the Augsburg – Buchloe and Munich – Buchloe lines . From the point of view of rail operations, the Lechfeldbahn also includes the Kaufering - Landsberg am Lech branch line, which opened five years earlier .

Building and operating history

On September 1, 1847, based on a Bavarian law of August 25, 1843, the 60.19 kilometer connection from Augsburg Central Station via Bobingen and Buchloe to Kaufbeuren was opened. In Bobingen, the 22.6 kilometer Lechfeld Railway, which has existed since May 15, 1877, branches off to Kaufering.

The 4.83 kilometers to Landsberg am Lech , which opened on November 1, 1872, are an extension of this . The Fuchstalbahn continues from there 28.71 kilometers to Schongau and was used for the first time on November 16, 1886. Landsberg train station is the interface between the Lechfeldbahn and the Fuchstalbahn between Landsberg am Lech and Schongau .

In addition to civil use, the Lechfeldbahn focused on military use from the start. A 7.4 km long parallel track was laid between Klosterlechfeld and the military training area. In this way, equipment and soldiers could be moved quickly. There was also a siding to the Schwabstadl ammunition depot .

The infrastructure along the railway line laid out in the 19th century was dismantled after the Second World War, and the military railway was closed in 1957. Like on many other branch lines, freight traffic was discontinued in the 1990s and the corresponding facilities (freight tracks and freight halls) were broken off. The route is only used by the Augsburg Local Railway as a connection towards Schongau.

Passenger traffic was not stopped despite long-standing rumors. After the integration into the Allgäu-Schwaben-Takt, the train frequency was increased and afterwards new railcars were put into service. In 2002 the Lechfeldbahn celebrated its 125th anniversary. From December 2007, the route was part of the Kneipp-Lechfeld-Bahn marketed by Deutsche Bahn AG .

On October 21, 2012, the Graben (Lechfeld) industrial park stop was opened between Oberottmarshausen and Lagerlechfeld . It is intended to provide better access to the commercial area that has emerged in recent years. Since the timetable change in December 2018, the route has been operated by the Bavarian Regiobahn .

outlook

As part of the implementation of the RegioSchienenTakt Augsburg , the range of trips between Augsburg and Lagerlechfeld is to be increased.

Future prospects

According to the concept of the Bavarian State Government for more electromobility on the rails in Bavaria, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann proposed the route Kaufering – Landsberg for electrification from a Bavarian perspective.
