Lee Carroll Bollinger (born April 30, 1946 in Santa Rosa , California ) is an American lawyer , professor and president of Columbia University since 2002 .

biography

After attending school, Bollinger first studied at the University of Oregon , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968 before completing a law degree with a Juris Doctor (JD). Afterwards he was first clerk of the minutes ( Law Clerk ) of Wilfred Feinberg , a judge at the US Court of Appeals and then of Warren E. Burger , the Chief Justice of the United States .

In 1973 he took up a position as professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School , where he taught for more than 20 years until 1994. Most recently, from 1987 to 1994, he was also Dean of the Law School .

He then moved to Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire) in 1994 , where he accepted a position as professor of government. At the same time there was Provost of the College between 1994 and 1996 , before he was President of the University of Michigan from 1996 to 2002 . Since 2002, Bollinger has succeeded George Erik Rupp as President of Columbia University and thus of one of the eight universities of the so-called Ivy League .

In addition to his teaching activities, he also wrote several legal textbooks in which he dealt in particular with the freedom of the press , freedom of speech and expression , i.e. the Freedom of Speech resulting from the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution . His best-known publications include The Tolerant Society: Freedom of Speech and Extremist Speech in America (1986), Images of a Free Press (1991), and Eternally Vigilant: Free Speech in the Modern Era (2001). He also published articles on the subject in newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal .

He was also a board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and has been a board member of the Washington Post Company since 2007 . Bollinger is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1992), the American Philosophical Society (2004) and the Council on Foreign Relations and trustees of the Gerald Ford - Foundation and the Kresge Foundation . He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Royal Shakespeare Company .

The Michigan State University awarded him in 2001 the honorary doctorate .

In an interview in Columbia Magazine in 2007 , Bollinger attributed the idea to Richard Bulliet to invite the then Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to give a guest lecture and discussion. This invitation from the university, for which Bollinger was responsible as president, was discussed very controversially, but was in principle supported by Senator and presidential candidate Obama as an expression of freedom of expression.
