Gerhard Lehmbruch

Gerhard Lehmbruch (born April 15, 1928 in Königsberg ) is a German political scientist .

Gerhard Lehmbruch came as the eldest of three children of the Protestant pastor Werner Lehmbruch and his wife Erna, née. Müller, to the world. He grew up in Klein-Dexen , East Prussia , until he was six , before the family moved to Rehhof in West Prussia near Marienwerder . After brief military service in the winter and spring of 1945, Lehmbruch made up his Abitur in 1947 in Weferlingen and began studying Protestant theology and philosophy at the Church of the University of Berlin-Zehlendorf . After moving to the universities of Göttingen and Tübingen , he completed his studies in Berlin in 1952 with the first church service examination. He then went to the University of Basel as a postgraduate for a year .

From 1953 to 1954 Lehmbruch was a research assistant at the political science chair of Professor Theodor Eschenburg at the University of Tübingen. He then studied political science, Eastern European history and sociology in Paris and Tübingen from 1954 to 1959 . In 1962 he received his doctorate there with a thesis on the French party system. From 1960 to 1967 he was a research assistant at the University of Tübingen. There he received his habilitation in political science in 1969 , taking into account, among other things, the writing proportional democracy from 1967. From 1969 to 1973 he held the position of a scientific council and professor at the University of Heidelberg . He then accepted professorships in political science at the Universities of Tübingen (1973–1978) and Konstanz (1978–1996). From 1991 to 1994 he was chairman of the German Association for Political Science . Lehmbruch has retired since the summer semester of 1996. Lehmbruch's academic students include Manfred G. Schmidt and Edgar Grande .

Lehmbruch's research focuses on institutions , political rule systems and policy development in comparison, the forms of negotiating democracy and the mediation of political interests, i.e. the relationships between government agencies and interest groups. In 1976 he published the standard work on political parties in the federal state on the interaction of federal institutions and party competition in the Federal Republic of Germany . In this book, Lehmbruch explained the so-called structural fracture thesis for the first time .

Lehmbruch was awarded numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. Lehmbruch is an honorary member of the Swiss Association for Political Science (2002) and the Austrian Society for Political Science (2003). In 2003 he was awarded the Theodor Eschenburg Prize for his life's work by the German Association for Political Science . In 2009 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Consortium for Political Research . A symposium was held on the occasion of the 85th birthday. The articles were published in 2015.

Lehmbruch has been married since 1967. The couple have two grown daughters.
