Leipzig student carnival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leipzig student carnival includes a series of carnival events in Leipzig that are organized exclusively by students . They differ in many respects from well-known, especially West German meeting and other carnival events , especially in their origins and customs.

Penalty councils

The organizers of the respective carnival events are currently nine student eleven councilors , who are based at the respective faculties of the University of Leipzig . The Ba-Hu Elferrat, which sees itself as a representative of the Leipzig University of Technology, Economics and Culture , and the Sorabija-Elferrat, an association of Sorbian students studying in Leipzig, are an exception .

The following penalty councils currently exist:

  • Ba-Hu Elferrat (HTWK Leipzig)
  • Bio-Elferrat (Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology)
  • Chemie-Elferrat (Faculty of Chemistry and Mineralogy)
  • DHfK-Elferrat (former DHfK , today Sports Science Faculty)
  • Medi-Elferrat (Medical Faculty)
  • Elferrat Physics and Geosciences (Faculty of Physics and Geosciences)
  • Sorabija -Elferrat
  • TV Elferrat (former section T ierproduktion and V eterinärmedizin; Faculty of Veterinary Medicine today)
  • WiWi-Elferrat (Faculty of Economics)

Almost all penalty councils are registered as clubs . An integral part of the club's life is the Elferrat trip, which is intended to strengthen cohesion within the Elferrat and gives a good opportunity to baptize new members . In addition to organizing the carnival events, the association's tasks also include other things, such as introductory events for freshmen (pub crawl or freshman party).

Another highlight is the “Big Elferrat Meeting”, which takes place every year in May. All of Leipzig's student councilors meet here to compete against each other in a sporting competition. In addition, the "Honnie" is awarded, a prize for outstanding performances in the past carnival season.

In 2014, the Leipziger Studentenfasching eV was founded as the umbrella organization of the Elferräte.

history

The oldest student Elferrat in Leipzig is the Ba-Hu Elferrat, which was founded in 1953 by construction students at the Bauhochschule (later TH Leipzig and HTWK). In 1955 the Elferrats were founded by the physicians, in 1958 that of the DHfK (German University of Physical Culture), that of the chemists in 1962 and 1970 the TV carnival.

During the GDR times, the student carnival events were very popular and well attended. The attractiveness of the events was based, among other things, on the criticism of political processes and the shortage economy of the socialist system expressed in one or the other carnival program . Although this was done “by the flower”, it was proven that Elferrat members were de -registered. Although the carnival programs always had to be approved by the section heads (the state heads of the faculties at the University and TH Leipzig) and a "friendly liaison from domestic intelligence" was always present at Elferrat meetings, it was always possible through skillful, playful implementation to set clear signals in harmless texts.

Not all student penalty councils survived the " turning point " and the resulting decline in visitors and members. In some cases, faculties were relocated or closed and the existence of the Elferrat and Carnival thus became obsolete. The Elfer Council of Physics and Geosciences is, however, a good example of a successful start-up (formerly: Elfer Council of Physicists and Mathematicians).

Current situation

There is also student carnival in other German cities, such as Jena , Weimar and Halle , but not again in Germany in terms of variety and size, as in Leipzig . In the 2005/2006 carnival season (November 2005 to February 2006) a total of 11 events with 18 carnival days were completed. There were also more than 10,000 guests.

The events focus on two periods. On the one hand, some Elferräte (Medi, TV) organize a "Little Carnival", which takes place from November 11th at the start of the carnival. Some Elferräte (Ba-Hu, Chemistry, Biology, DHfK) are organizing a “carnival lecture” on November 11 at 11:11 am at their faculty. All Elferräte then organize a "Great Carnival" in January or February, which, however, is not based on the traditional Carnival days between Weiberfastnacht and Ash Wednesday . Rather, the dates are coordinated so that there is as little overlap as possible and everyone has celebrated their carnival by the end of the semester .

After the competition sometimes even led to disruptions of the program by other penalty councils, the individual penalty councils have been moving closer together since the 1990s. Efforts are currently underway to establish the “Leipzig Student Carnival” as a joint brand and to make it better known as a whole. A flyer with all the carnival dates was published at the beginning of January 2006 and a joint website was launched. Since 2010, the “Leipzig Summer Carnival” has been held as a joint event of the Elferräte.

Traditionally, the program of the individual Elferräte is attended by delegations from the other and then a "statement" is held in which criticism, but now also praise and constructive advice on the individual performances are expressed. The close relationship between Medis and TV has been established for a long time, as they enter a scene of the program with an unannounced entry at the respective partner on the last day.

particularities

Due to its origin and the student background, the Leipzig student carnival differs greatly from traditional and well-known carnival and carnival events: there are no prince couple , prince guard , dance mariechen or similar institutions.

The usually one and a half to two hour program includes skits about politics, professors and everyday student problems, a male ballet and a female dance, and at Ba-Hu also traditional hand-made speeches. A final song (respective carnival anthem) at the end of the program is also mandatory. Other elements such as a self-made carnival film, mixed dances or fireworks vary from Elferrat to Elferrat.

There are also enormous differences in the size of the carnival events. In the past, the Sorabija-Elferrat organized its carnival in a student dormitory, where the room size certainly did not exceed 50 m² and around 100 guests were present. The whole opposite is the DHfK carnival. This is celebrated in the Ernst-Grube-Halle on the Jahnallee campus by up to 3000 guests.

As a student who wants to participate in a penalty council, you have a free choice. For example, you don't have to be a doctor, chemist or biologist to be a member of one of these councils.

The number of members also has nothing to do with 11, as it is usually far higher. Typical clothing is worn to indicate membership of a penalty council. For some, this is modeled on the subject of study. For example, the physicians carry OP -Clothes that DHfK tracksuits, the biologists a tailor for dress suit coat , the Ba Hu-Elferrat a carpenter gap and economists shirt & tie . The Elferrat's logo (back, chest) can be found in the appropriate place on this clothing. Every Elferrat also has its own fool call , which is mostly study-specific.
