Leonard Langheinrich , actually: Leonard Langheinrich-Anthos , stage name: Anthos (born May 17, 1890 in Schönholz near Berlin ; † June 7, 1944 in Berlin) was a German journalist , radio presenter , literary critic and writer . He was also a pioneer in conveying literary content in the early days of broadcasting .

Life

Langheinrich was born on May 17, 1890 as the son of General Director Langheinrich in Berlin. He was born with Erika Kruger married. After graduating from Bismarck-Gymnasium in Berlin, he began studying law and political science at the Université de Lausanne in 1909 and continued this at the universities of Berlin, Freiburg and Würzburg. In 1915 he received his doctorate in law and political science (Dr. iur. Et rer. Pol.) At the University of Würzburg with his legal dissertation "The death of the contracting parties in its influence on the conclusion of a contract (a contribution to the theory of negative contractual interests )" PhD.

After completing his studies, he initially found a position in industry and some authorities, but turned more and more to the press and German literature. He preferred the areas of radio, film and theater.

In 1927 he became press chief of Funk-Stunden AG in Berlin (FST Berlin), the first radio station in Germany. Between 1927 and 1932 he moderated numerous programs on German and international literature, as well as the multi-part programs Book Hour (1927–1931), “Creators of Strange Stories” (1928), “Poesie der Großstadt” (1929), “German satire of the day” " Or " German Zeitsatiriker des Tag " (1929), " German Master Comedies " (1929), " Entertaining Hour " (1930), " The Modern English Novel and Its Present Meaning " (1930) and " The Uncanny in World Literature " ( 1931-1932). In addition, he presented reading samples from various short stories and novels and in the series "Bucherstunde" several books. The transmitter, based in Berlin, included the so-called "North German broadcasting district". Langheinrich's broadcasts could be received in the upper post office districts of Berlin, Potsdam , Stettin , Frankfurt (Oder) and half of Magdeburg , ie in parts of Prussia , and initially also in parts of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz . At the beginning of his broadcasts there were almost 9.2 million inhabitants in the transmission area and around 8.8 million inhabitants from 1929. Under his stage name “Anthos” he presented his first own stories to FST Berlin in 1931: “The Living Water” and “The Story of a Fettered Man” . In 1932 he read more of his own stories on the show “Anthos reads own prose” . Some of his programs could also be heard on the radio station Deutsche Welle (DW), which can be received throughout Germany . From 1930 to 1932 Langheinrich also worked as a foreign correspondent for Universum Film AG (UFA).

Based on the script for the film Der Student von Prag by Hanns Heinz Ewers from 1913, which is considered the first German art film and thus a milestone in film history, Langheinrich wrote a novel of the same name, which was published in 1930. From 1933 Langheinrich settled down entirely as a freelance writer in his place of residence in Berlin-Friedenau . The first comprehensive book published by him in 1933 on the life and work of the German-Baltic poet Frank Thiess , whose school friend Langheinrich was, became famous .

In an air raid in May 1944 he lost all his belongings in Berlin and passed away a month later.
