Leonard Zamora Legaspi

Leonard Zamora Legaspi OP (born November 25, 1935 in Meycauayan , Philippines , † August 8, 2014 in Manila ) was Archbishop of Caceres .

Life

Leonard Zamora Legaspi joined the religious order of the Dominicans at and received on 17 December 1960, the priestly ordination . He completed a bachelor's degree in philosophy in Hong Kong (1955) and a degree in theology at the Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Manila (1962). He received his PhD in Theology (1962) and Philosophy (1975) from UST Manila. At Harvard Business School , he completed a master's degree in educational management (1971).

Legaspi has served in numerous educational and academic posts including chairman of the department for the seminaries of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) and professor and dean of the theological faculty at the Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He was rector of the UST seminary (1968/70) and rector of the UST University (1970/77) as well as the first Philippine rector of the Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas (1971/75).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 25, 1977 titular bishop of Elephantaris in Mauretania and auxiliary bishop in Manila . The Apostolic Nuncio in the Philippines , Bruno Torpigliani , donated him episcopal ordination on August 8 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Juan Bautista Velasco Díaz OP, Bishop of Xiamen , and Federico O. Escaler SJ , Prelate of Kidapawan .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Caceres on October 20, 1983 . On September 8, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.

Legaspi was President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). He was a member of the Permanent Council of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican. He was a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and of the Congregation for the Clergy .
