The Leonardo is a research vessel of NATO . The ship sails under the flag of Italy . It is run by Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) in La Spezia bereedert .

history

The ship was built in 2002 at the British shipyard McTay Marine. The hull was supplied by the Polish shipyard Remontowa. The keel was laid on July 1st, the launch on May 9th, 2001. The ship was delivered on July 29th, 2002.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . For electricity generation are three diesel generators of the US manufacturer Cummins engine available, two generators of the type NTA 14 M each with 236  kW power and a generator of the type KTA 38 kW with 700 power.

Two Schottel rudder propellers are available for propulsion . In addition, the ship is equipped with a as a water jet propulsion designed bow thruster fitted. Rudder propellers and bow thrusters allow dynamic positioning . The ship is thus the smallest research ship in the world equipped with a system for dynamic positioning.

Two cranes are available on board the ship, one of which is in front of and one behind the deckhouse . There is a stern boom at the stern of the ship . The ship is equipped with three winches for scientific purposes. Behind the superstructures there is a 65 m² open working deck, on which there is also space for a 20-foot container .

In the hull of the ship there is a moon pool for the use of AUV and ROV . The ship can also be used as a base for diving missions. There are several wet and dry laboratories on board. The laboratories are 35 m² in total.

The range of the ship is given as 1,200 to 1,500  nautical miles . The ship can stay at sea for up to seven days.

There is space on board for up to ten people, including five crew members and five scientists . For day trips, up to ten people can be embarked in addition to the crew. The crew consists of Italian navy personnel.
