Leonhard Fendt

Leonhard Fendt (born June 2, 1881 in Baiershofen , Bavaria , † January 9, 1957 in Augsburg ) was a German theologian who worked as a Catholic and later as a Protestant university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in Dillingen, Leonhard Fendt studied Catholic theology in Munich and Strasbourg. In Munich he became a member of the Catholic student association KSSt.V. Alemannia in KV . In 1910 he received his doctorate in Strasbourg, the subject of his dissertation was The Christology of Nestorius . Fendt was then sub-rain of the seminary in Dillingen and, from 1915, professor of dogmatics at the Philosophical-Theological University there. In 1917, however, he resigned the office because he no longer saw himself called to teach Catholic dogmas.

With Friedrich Loofs in Halle (Saale) he deepened his knowledge of Protestant theology and converted to the Protestant Church in 1918. Then he held the pastoral position in Gommern near Magdeburg . In addition to a study of Gnostic Mysteries , he wrote a work on the Lutheran worship of the 16th century and published the title Fulfillment in 1923 . On good-natured Lutheranism .

Fendt had been pastor in Magdeburg since 1925 and came to Berlin in 1927. There he served at the Church of Heilsbronnen , finally completed his habilitation at the Berlin theological faculty for practical theology , continued teaching in 1931, and held the chair for this subject from 1934 until the end of the war in 1945.

After a temporary job at the University of Erlangen and subsequent work in the mission house in Bad Liebenzell , he lived in Augsburg for the last few years. Fendt published numerous and z. Some of the most popular writings.

Trivia

Shortly before his death, Fendt is said to have converted back to the Catholic Church, for which there is no reliable evidence.
