Leopold Alexander Schach von Wittenau (born February 17, 1787 in Rosenberg in West Prussia , † April 26, 1862 in Schwedt / Oder ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade .

Life

origin

Leopold was a son of the Prussian lieutenant a. D. Johann Wilhelm Schach von Wittenau (1751–1827) and his wife Maria Anna, born von Pannwitz (1752–1822). His brother Albert (1794–1877) also became a Prussian general.

Military career

Chess became effective on October 15, 1798 as Junker in the Dragoon Regiment "Hertzberg" the Prussian army and advanced on 8 January 1803 second lieutenant . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the battles near Halle, Criwitz and Lübeck and was made inactive after the surrender of Ratekau .

With the beginning of the Wars of Liberation , Schach returned to the army and was hired on June 1, 1813 as Rittmeister in the 5th East Prussian Landwehr Cavalry Regiment. He took part in the siege of Danzig , where he was wounded and awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

After the war, he was aggregated to the 3rd Dragoons Regiment on February 26, 1816 and transferred to the 3rd Hussar Regiment as a squadron chief on March 14, 1818 . There he rose to major in mid-May 1830 and was awarded the Order of St. John on January 18, 1834 . On March 30, 1837, Schach was initially commissioned to lead the 10th Hussar Regiment and on September 15, 1838 he was appointed regiment commander. In this position, awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus II. Class and the Order of Henry the Lion in October 1838 , Chess advanced to colonel by the end of March 1843 . On March 31, 1846 he was appointed commander of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade. There he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, on October 1, 1848, and was promoted to Major General on May 8, 1849. On May 4, 1850, he retired with a pension . He died on April 26, 1862 in Schwedt / Oder.

Chess married Karoline Emilie Brunner (1800–1870) on April 10, 1822. The couple had several children:
