Albert Schach from Wittenau

Wilhelm Albert Schach von Wittenau (born April 28, 1794 in Rosenberg , † March 23, 1877 in Dresden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Danzig .

Life

origin

Albert was a son of the first lieutenant a. D. Johann Schach von Wittenau (1751–1827) and his wife Maria Anna, née von Pannwitz (1752–1822). His brother Leopold (1787–1862) also became a Prussian general

Military career

In 1806, Schach joined the infantry regiment “von Natzmer” of the Prussian Army as a corporal . On May 6, 1810 he became a non-commissioned officer in the artillery and took part in the battles at Smolensk , Borodino and Krasnoi during the Russian campaign in 1812 . He was wounded in the Battle of the Berezina .

After the campaign, at the end of February 1813, Schach was promoted to second lieutenant of the artillery. During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battles near Luckau and Dahme and in the siege of Torgau . For Magdeburg he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

After the war, Schach was promoted to captain until the beginning of May 1818 . On May 5, 1835 he came to Berlin as an artillery officer and on May 23, 1835 was also President of the Gun Revision Commission. With a patent from February 2, 1838, he was promoted to major on April 30, 1839 , before becoming department commander of the 4th Artillery Brigade on January 6, 1842 . This was followed by a use in the Guard Artillery Brigade from February 27, 1844 to July 30, 1848 . Subsequently, Schach was initially assigned to lead the 2nd Artillery Brigade and on November 23, 1848 he was appointed brigadier. In this position, chess was on May 8, 1849 Lieutenant Colonel and on January 18, 1851 to Colonel promoted.

On May 18, 1854, he was placed in command of Danzig and as such on June 8, 1854 à la suite of the 2nd Artillery Regiment. Schach married on August 30, 1824 in Danzig Rosalie von Frantzius (1807-1889), a daughter of the merchant and banker Johann Gotthard von Frantzius (1769-1849) and granddaughter of Theodosius Christian von Frantzius . The couple had several children:
