Leopold Wilhelm von der Schulenburg (born August 28, 1772 on Gut Kremzow , Pyritz district ; † 1838 on Gut Priemern near Seehausen ) was a Prussian district administrator and knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Life

Leopold Wilhelm came from the branch Priemern-Beetzendorf of the Black Tribe of the Brandenburg-Prussian noble family von der Schulenburg, which was particularly widespread in the Altmark . He was married to Juliane von Kirchbach (1785–1873) since May 23, 1805. The couple had five sons, including the hereditary chef of the Kurmark Brandenburg and member of the Prussian mansion , the district administrator Otto Ludwig Wilhelm Ferdinand von der Schulenburg (1806-1883), and the Prussian lieutenant general Julius von der Schulenburg (1809-1893).

Schulenburg joined the Prussian army , although he had a rich legacy, following the family tradition (his father was a Prussian major general ) . He served in the hussar regiment "von der Goltz" and took part as a second lieutenant in the First Coalition War against revolutionary France . In a battle near Luxembourg on October 1, 1793, he distinguished himself particularly. This is what Blücher reported to the commanding general , the Duke of Braunschweig, on October 4th :

"[...] During the attack, as I had near Luxemburg, the lieutenants von W. and von der Schulenburg, each with 20 horses, attacked an enemy detachment of infantry, some 100 men strong, and prevented the enemy from making a very useful one Forest could reach. When I attacked the enemy in the front, they struck his flank, so that the enemy left some 70 dead on the square and 1 captain and 55 men were made prisoner. The lieutenant vd Schulenburg may also have a reason for being able to adorn himself with the gracious memory of SM, the king, because when the general, his father's death, when he subdued the order plm of the benevolent, he accepted SM made known [...] that the same person once wished to have the opportunity to be able to pardon him if a case were to arise [...]. "

The Duke of Braunschweig passed Blücher's report on to the king, who then awarded Leopold Wilhelm von der Schulenburg the order pour le merite with the highest cabinet order of October 10, 1793.

"[...] I from your corps conferred the order plm to No. 526 [...] [...]"

Schulenburg continued to serve, but then retired from active service as Rittmeister in order to manage his inherited estates. These were the goods Priemern , Bretsch , Dewitz, Drüsedau, Lindhof and Eichstedt, the Probstey Salzwedel , Beetzendorf (owned by the family since 1345), Apenburg, Rittleben and Winterfeld in the Altmark as well as Maaßleben and Seegarden in the Duchy of Schleswig . Because of the Schleswig property, he was admitted to the Danish nobility by the highest decree of the Danish King of February 14, 1818. In addition to managing his extensive land holdings, he was appointed district administrator. He was also a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
