The 2008/09 season was the 18th season of the Latvian Ice Hockey League , the highest Latvian ice hockey league . Master was for the fifth time in the history of the HK Liepājas Metalurgs .

In the main round, the eight teams played 28 games each. The four best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played out. The four Latvian participants in the Belarusian extra league were also automatically qualified for the playoffs . Each team received three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after overtime, one point for a loss after overtime and zero points for a defeat after regular time.
