Lew Gerassimowitsch Loizjanski , born Lew Gerschonowitsch Loizjanski , ( Russian Лев Герасимович Лойцянский , maiden name Russian Лев Гершонович Лойцянский * December 13 . Jul / 26. December  1900 greg. In St. Petersburg , † 3. November 1991 ) was a Russian mathematician , Physicist and university professor .

Life

Loitsjanski was the fifth child of the partner of the printing company W. I. Anderson and GD Loizjanski in Kaunas Gerschon Dawidowitsch Loizjanski and his wife Beila-Rischa Jankelewna née Posner from Grodno . The family had settled in St. Petersburg a few years before Loitsjanski was born. 1908–1917 Loizjanski attended the private Jewish boys' high school run by IG Eisebet in St. Petersburg , which he graduated with honors. Then he began studying at the marine engineering school in Kronstadt . Soon he moved to the Imperial University of St. Petersburg in the mathematics department of the physical- mathematical faculty .

After the October Revolution , Loitsjanski went to Simferopol in the fall of 1918 in the beginning of the Russian Civil War and studied at the Tauride University in the mathematics department together with Viktor Vladimirovich Nemyzki . There taught Nikolay Mitrofanovich Krylov , Vladimir Ivanovich Smirnov and Nikolai Sergeyevich Koshlyakov . Loitsjanski was drafted into the White Army under Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel and released after two months in Stavropol because of his health. In 1921 he finished his studies at the Tauride University. He now taught there and worked in the main inspection of the Crimean military study institutions .

In April 1922 Loitsjanski returned to Petrograd . He completed his studies at the physical- mechanical faculty of the Polytechnic Institute (LPI) and became Alexander Alexandrowitsch Friedmann's assistant . In 1930 he was elected professor at the chair for theoretical mechanics at LPI. He wrote mathematical papers and textbooks on theoretical mechanics and the mechanics of viscous liquids .

In 1935 Loizjanski received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences without defending a dissertation . In the same year he founded with other Department for hydro - aerodynamics at the LPI, which he headed for 40 years. He also worked as a consultant for the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (ZAGI) in Moscow. His research focus was the boundary layers .

During the German-Soviet War Loitsjanski was evacuated to Kazan in 1941 and worked for the Kazan branch of the ZAGI. From 1942 he worked at the ZAGI in Stachanowo as head of the calculation department of the aerodynamic laboratory. In 1945 he returned to the LPI.

In 1956 Loizjanski became a founding member of the National Committee of the USSR for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR .
