Lightning ( Japanese: ラ イ ト ニ ン グ ) is one of the main characters in the Final Fantasy game series . She is the protagonist in Final Fantasy XIII and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII . She is also a character in Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Dissidia 012 Duodecim: Final Fantasy . It is speculated that Lightning will also be seen in future parts of the Final Fantasy series, but as a guest character.

She is the first playable female main character in the Fabula Nova Crystallis saga of the Final Fantasy series. In the English version of the games she is dubbed by Ali Hillis , in the Japanese version by Maaya Sakamoto .

Lightning has been included in several video game portals including IGN Entertainment , VideoGamer.com, GameZone and Famitsu , as well as by AfterEllen in several leaderboards. In 2009 she received a Fumitsu Award for "best character". In 2013 she received a Dengeki PlayStation Award for "Best Video Game Character". Journalists and game developers even voted her third place for the best female game characters in Japanese and Western role-playing games. According to Complex magazine , Lightning is in the top 50 video game heroines, and according to Famitsu magazine, she ranks 34th among the most famous video game characters in Japan . Still, it received mixed reviews from several video game portals.

Her real name is Claire Farron .

Role in Final Fantasy XIII

Background from Final Fantasy

The Final Fantasy XIII game trilogy , in which the character Lightning plays a significant role, is part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis saga, which also includes Final Fantasy Type 0 and Final Fantasy XV . However, Lightning does not appear in the last two games mentioned.

Final Fantasy XIII is set on the fictional worlds Grand Pulse and Cocoon , with the latter being the main location. Cocoon is an artificial sphere that hovers over Grand Pulse and is controlled by the sanctum , a theocratic government. Both worlds are guarded by beings with god-like powers, so-called Fal'Cie . These control the forces of nature and have the ability to appoint certain people on Cocoon and Grand Pulse as their servants, known as L'Cie . They are given a mark that represents one of the two worlds, as well as a task to be fulfilled. This task is given to those affected in a vision . If it is done in time, the chosen ones turn into crystals and, according to legend, gain eternal life. If the task fails, they will be turned into mindless monsters as punishment.

A war between Cocoon and Pulse took place a few hundred years before the game began. In this case, the Pulse-L'Cie struck a large hole in Cocoon. Since then, the people of Cocoon have lived in fear of another invasion , which the sanctum will use to stay in power.

Fictional biography

Claire Farron's parents died when she was a child. She doesn't know anything about her father and her mother died when she was 15. Shortly afterwards, she took on the pseudonym Lightning . Since she has no other adult relatives, she took care of her little sister Serah on her own . She dropped out of school and went to the army, where she quickly rose to officer . However, she later resigned from the army to save her sister.

She voluntarily went to the purgation , a government-planned deportation of the population, in order to unknowingly execute them after a Pulse L'Cie was found in Bodhum, a town in Cocoon . On the way to the purgation, she met Sazh Katzroy , a former pilot who was trying to find the destination of his son Dajh. Lightning tried to find her sister on the way to purgation, who has since been declared an enemy of Cocoon. Lightning found Serah in the residue, but shortly afterwards Serah turned into a crystal, which for Lightning was synonymous with death. In revenge, she tried to kill the super-being Anima with a group consisting of Snow Villiers, Hope Estheim and Sazh Katzroy , which did not succeed. This transformed Lightning and the rest of the group against their will in L'Cie . They were then also declared enemies of Cocoon.

After she was able to leave Cocoon with the group and land on Grand Pulse, she managed to kill the sanctuary Fal'Cie Orphanus - who tried in the most brutal way to destroy his destiny, since he stood between life and death - and to kill Cocoon save. While she and the rest of the group - except Fang and Vanilla - were freed from the transformation, she went in search of the two. Lightning disappeared and was taken to Valhalla to protect the goddess Etro from Caius Ballad , an immortal man who cursed Etro. With Caius' death, Etro and Serah also died, the chaos was set free from Valhalla and Lightning turned to crystal.

500 years later, she was resurrected by the deity Bhunivelze in order to collect as many souls as possible for the new world he wants to create. In return, Bhunivelze promised her that he would revive her little sister. When she found out that Bhunivelze had stolen Serah's soul and manipulated her own memories, she decided to betray him and kill him. She gave up her human existence and defeated Bhunivelze. Lightning then experienced the creation of a new universe.

characterization

Lightning is described as determined, precise, and consistent. In the game, this straightforwardness is interpreted as ruggedness or coldness. She is considered a loner . She put on her pseudonym to suppress her past and grief. Her cool and introverted character creates a facade so that she does not have to reveal her injured interior. She also fights against her determination to be an L'Cie and thus an enemy of her homeland, Cocoon, and her guilt for not having believed Serah's story.

Her cold feeling comes from the urge to protect other people and her fear of not being able to do so. For this reason, it is very difficult for Lightning to develop a relationship with the other characters, except for her little sister.

Relation to the other characters

Lightning is referred to as a loner and initially sees the other protagonists as a burden. Only in the further course of the game does she manage to establish an emotional bond with Hope . Her relationship with Snow Villiers , another protagonist in the game, is described as strained, as Lightning blames him for her little sister becoming an L'Cie.

Development of the figure

Emergence

Motoru Toriyama wanted a female character who had never existed in a final fantasy game before: a character with an athletic body and less feminine nature. Toriyama gave Tetsuya Nomura , who was to design the character Lightning, how she should look. He was supposed to make her look like a "female version of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII ". In a later interview, Toriyama said that the only similarity between the two characters is their past. Both were active in the military and show a "cold personality". Nomura was already responsible for the designs of the characters in previous Final Fantasy games. There were several design proposals for Lightning, also from other employees in the game series, but Nomura's design was selected. Due to the graphic capabilities Nomura was able to incorporate further details into his design. Her hair color and styling should show her feminine side and contrast her athletic appearance. In the second part of the series, Final Fantasy XIII-2 , Lightning was designed by Isamo Kamikokuryo .

synchronization

In the Japanese edition of the game trilogy, Lightning is dubbed by Maaya Sakamoto, in the English version by Ali Hillis. Sakamoto said she was impressed with Lightning. According to Sakamoto, portraying Lightning as a woman on the one hand and a professional fighter on the other was difficult. Yoshinori Kitasi was of the opinion that Sakamoto's voice helped to better embody Lightning's femininity. Ali Hillis was given the voice actor role after reading a few passages from the character's script.

Reviews

Final Fantasy XIII

While Final Fantasy XIII was still in the making , Todd Ciolek of the Anime News Network described Lightning as "business-like cool" and was not convinced of the character. After completing the game, Ciolek described her character as "too distantly cold, even though the authors of the game tried to write a really engaging story about her." However, he also believed that Lightning had a problem with the course of the story within the Get a more challenging character in the game. VideoGamer.com's Wesley Yin-Poole described her simply as a "female version of Cloud Strife," a protagonist from an earlier title in the game series. On 1UP it was said that she embodies the "typically grumpy Square Enix character." Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot, however, described Lightning as an "lovable, strong-willed beauty." The British edition of the games magazine IGN believed that she was Compared to Hope or Snow, the character is “constantly popular”, even if her life story gets stuck in “an ordinary wave.” Carolyn Gudmundson from GamesRadar was not very enthusiastic: She revealed that the character “seemed one-dimensional and boring, although hers History is extensive ”. Christian Nutt of Gamasutra wrote that her relationship with the rest of the characters in the game gave Lightning more humanity in her backstory.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Joe Juba from Game Informer was disappointed that Lightning only got a supporting role in Final Fantasy XIII-2 in favor of the other characters Serah and Hope. Alexa Ray Corriea from DualShockers also shared this opinion. She said fans of the first game would be disappointed that Lightning was no longer the main character in the game, even if the playable characters were interesting. Eurogamer reviewer Simon Parkin wrote that the game's history suffers from a lack of purposefulness. VanOrd added that he was disappointed that characters like Lightning and Caius Ballad were rarely seen in the cutscenes, as they were stronger personalities compared to the game's protagonists.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

On the third part of the game series, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Juba criticized that the story of Lightning had major flaws. Her more pronounced emotional coldness also makes her downright unsympathetic. VanOrd claimed that Lightning no longer looked interesting and her stoicism made it more difficult for the player to put themselves in the character. Dave Riley of the Anime News Network, however, described the stoic attitude - except in the previous two games - as a "servant of God" appropriate. On USGamer.com it was said that she appeared "downright apathetic" for not showing her personality. In contrast, another reviewer wrote on a similar portal that there are a few side quests in the game that will help give her some personality and a little sympathy. On Destructoid stated that their "masquerade and the dialogues" "brighten" their character would: It has been argued that there are elements in the game that will make them less work "flat and lifeless," which was an improvement.

Awards

In a list of the ten best characters in the entire VideoGamer.com game series, Lightning was voted number 6; Critic Yin Poole writes that Lightning is an interesting character in her own way, although there are many similarities to Cloud. In 2011, she was included on IGN's list of the best characters in the series. It was ranked eighth on a similar leaderboard compiled by GameZone . Cheat Code Central lists Lightning as one of the best female game characters.

In a list of the “hottest female game characters” by AfterEllen , Lightning came second. In a list of the "Video Game Heroes of the Year 2010" by Game Informer, it was voted number 8. A year earlier she received an award at the Famitsu Awards for "best character", also awarded by Famitsu magazine. Other appearances outside of the main video game

Lightning is part of a mini-game in Kingdom Hearts Re: coded . In the third-person role-playing game shooter The 3rd Birthday , Lightning's outfit can be unlocked and worn by the protagonist of the game, Aya Brea. Maaya Sakamoto, who dubbed both characters on the Japanese version of the game, recorded Aya's voice so that she sounds like Lightning when her outfit is worn. Lightning is a playable character in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and its sequel Curtain Call . In the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn it was possible to meet Lightning as part of a one-time quest and, if successful , to receive items from Final Fantasy XIII - outfits and weapons from Snow Villiers and Lightning. The items received were based on the gender of the character played in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This event was started to promote the game Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which was released in early 2014 .

It is speculated whether Lightning will appear in the game Kingdom Hearts III - the release of which is still unclear.

Merchandise

Several merchandising products were produced for the game trilogy, including specific products about the game's protagonist, Lightning. Two products that were inspired by her are necklaces and a women's perfume called Lightning eau de Toilette . There are three different Lightning action figures, all made by Play Arts Kai , a company that has often designed game figures for the Final Fantasy series in the past . She is also part of the trading card game for Final Fantasy. It was also shown on the packaging of all food products from the Japanese company Ezaki Glico .

Based on the video game series, there are currently the three books Final Fantasy XIII - Episode Zero: The Promise , Final Fantasy XIII-2: Fragments - The Beginning and Final Fantasy XIII-2: Fragments - Review , some of which were written from the perspective of Lightning. In the German-speaking countries , the novels were published by Panini Books .
