Lime basil ( Ocimum × africanum )

Lime basil ( Ocimum × africanum ) is a species of basil ( Ocimum ) within the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is a hybrid of ( Ocimum americanum ) and ( Ocimum basilicum ). It occurs in Africa and in temperate and tropical Asia and is used as a spice plant.

description

The lemon basil grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of about 30 centimeters. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope .

use

It is used as a culinary herb because of its unique, intense lemony aroma .

distribution

The wide distribution area extends from Ethiopia , Kenya , Tanzania , Uganda , Cameroon , Zaire , Angola , Malawi to Madagascar and from India , Laos , Thailand , Cambodia , Vietnam , the Chinese provinces of Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan , Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and Zhejiang to Taiwan and Malaysia .

Taxonomy

The accepted name of the natural hybrid between Ocimum americanum Lour. and Ocimum basilicum L. is Ocimum × africanum Lour. The first publication of Ocimum × africanum was in 1790 by João de Loureiro in Flora Cochinchinensis , p. 370. Synonyms for Ocimum × africanum Lour. are: Ocimum americanum var. pilosum (Willd.) AJPaton , Ocimum basilicum var. anisatum Benth. , Ocimum basilicum var. Pilosum (Willd.) Benth. , Ocimum × citriodorum Vis. , Ocimum pilosum Willd. , Ocimum × pilosum Willd. , Ocimum × graveolens A.Br. , Ocimum × petitianum A. Rich.
