Lismore is a city in the extreme northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales , about 45 km from the easternmost point of the Australian continent in Byron Bay . It is the largest city in the subtropical Northern Rivers area.
Lismore is the center of the local government area of Lismore City . The administrative headquarters are located in the Goonellabah district.
history
Lismore was founded in 1856 and had a population of 27,569 at the 2011 census. The city is the main location of Southern Cross University . In addition, it is a center for artists of all kinds and has numerous galleries, studios and theaters. The city is also the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Lismore , which was established in 1887.
In the late 1970s there were headlines about an allegedly glowing grave cross in the north cemetery of the city, which attracted numerous curious people and those who believe in the spirit. The background could never be clarified and in 1986 the stone cross disappeared without a trace.
On February 11, 2005, the German backpacker Simone Strobel disappeared at a campsite in Lismore and was found dead a few days later not far from her van. Strobel was strangled. Initially, both her boyfriend at the time and the two Germans who were traveling with her were suspects. However, the fact remains unresolved to this day.

Lismore is on an important main road to the Gold Coast and has a small airport. The city can also be reached by rail; it is on the Casino - Coolangatta (Gold Coast) route. In Casino you can get a connection to the main Brisbane - Sydney route .
