Walter Browne became the first Australian to be named grandmaster in 1970.

The list of Australian chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the Australian Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:

General

In local chess, nine grandmasters, 27 international masters, three women's grandmasters and 12 international women's champions are eligible to play for the Australian Chess Federation. One grandmaster, six international champions and two international women champions have already died, one international master is no longer eligible to play for the Australian Federation.

In correspondence chess, four Australian players have earned the title of Grand Master, five that of Merited International Master, 18 that of International Master and one player that of Women's Grand Master. Cecil Purdy won the first correspondence chess world championship in 1953.

The Australian individual championship was played 59 times, the women's championship 22 times. In two Australian championships the title was awarded to two players each, in an Australian championship of women four players won the title. The record champion is Darryl Johansen with six titles, Marion Mott-McGrath won the women's competition with four titles the most.

Another two Australian players had a historic rating of at least 2500 before July 1971 .

  • Other associations : For players who were sooner or later eligible to play for at least one other association, this indicates these associations with the periods of eligibility to play (if known).
