List of Australian champions in chess
The list of Australian champions in chess contains the winners of all Australian individual championships.
General
The title of Australian champion was first played in 1885, but the competition was held irregularly until the 1920s. Since 1922 the competition (interrupted by the Second World War) has generally been held every two years, with the title being played out in two consecutive years in 1968/69 and 1969/70. Since 1971, in the years when there is no Australian championship, the Australian Open has been held, in which foreign players are also allowed to participate.
The women's championship was first held in 1966. It was initially an independent tournament, since 2003 the title has been awarded to the best-placed Australian player in the Australian Open. Originally, the title was only awarded if at least six women from at least three Australian states or territories participated in the Australian Open; However, after the title could not be awarded five times in a row, the provisions were relaxed.
