Ensembles

Ensemble old town Heilsbronn

The Cistercian monastery town of Heilsbronn ( Lage ) was the fortified capital of a medieval monastery state with considerable free float in Franconia , an economic center on an agricultural basis and at the same time an important burial place for noble donor families, including the Counts of Abenberg , the Lords of Heideck and the Hohenzollern, because of this sepulchral function in the Middle Ages also called the "Christian bedchamber of Franconia". Founded in 1132 by Bishop Otto von Bamberg as an episcopal monastery under the patronage of the Counts of Abenberg, it developed into an imperial monastery in the Staufer period, which of course came under the patronage of the Nuremberg burgraves from the 13th century and finally became part of the margraviate of Ansbach. After the Reformation under Abbot Schopper, an evangelical monastery for 50 years, from the secularization of 1578 to 1736 margravial princely school, the former monastery properties remained united under their own margravial monastery administration based in Heilsbronn until the end of the Hohenzollern rule. Heilsbronn's economic, school and burial functions have outlived the actual heart of the complex, the Cistercian monastery, for centuries. The ensemble encompasses the monastery in its walling, including the former monastery cattle yard in front of the Nuremberg gate and the former monastery pond to the northwest in front of the wall. In the architectural appearance, the strictly functional structure of the former monastery town is still reflected today, its shaping in plan and at least in the cores of many massive buildings from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century. In the center of the entire complex, on a triangular, market-like extension of the winding main street, lies the former gate to the enclosure, the buildings of which are axially related to the church and thus reveal themselves as part of the oldest planning. Around two cloisters to the north of the church, which have been demolished due to the topographical conditions, are the most important buildings of the enclosure, some of which have been preserved at least in fragments. Refectory , dormitory , convent house (probably the oldest abbot house), but also, further away from the church, monastery kitchen building, bursaria (administration building), farm buildings, in the immediate vicinity of the cloister area also monastery hospital (infirmatorium) and monk's bath as well as the core probably the 14th New abbey belonging to the 19th century. The walled lay town has a south-western main gate and two gates. Of the numerous buildings, economic and handicraft facilities that can be verified here, the following are still in their core or at least in fragments: The lay church of St. Katharina, Klostertaberne, Spitalkirche, Alte Abtei, Klosterschlachthaus, the multi-part Salhof, core of the Abenberg-owned village that was donated to the founding of the monastery in the 12th century, the place of which is today's market, as well as the Lohmühle, grain writing shop, wine press, monastery bakery and the monumental building of the monastery mill. The walling, in the literature also the 12./13. Attributed to the 19th century, it encompasses extensive gardens, storage and workplaces (e.g. for carpenters on the so-called Lindenplatz) as well as the south-facing permanent house of the noble, later princely guardian, today the rectory, with its own paved entrance from the field side. The bourgeoisisation that started since the secularization in 1578 (there had been no free citizens in the monastery town) led to the progressive privatization of the monuments to the artisan bourgeoisie. A slowly progressing process of urbanization (market rights 1806, city rights 1932) preserved the structure of the medieval monastery town except for a few minor disturbances. File number: E-5-71-165-1.

Site fortification

The fortification of the monastery consists of a simple quarry stone wall from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century. The associated gate structures are no longer available. The following wall sections have been preserved:

  • Wall move from the Nürnberger Pforte to the northeast corner, different preservation and height, partly on a steep sloping hillside terrace, wall move on the east side, running straight, bridging the Schwabach, wall remnants, partly unrecognizable or broken by construction, at the former Burggrafenhaus with corner tower also a gate, barrel-vaulted (walled up) passage
  • Wall move east of the former Ansbacher Tor, partly dissolved in residential buildings, course of the wall, partly dissolved in residential buildings up to the Nürnberger Pforte with breakthroughs and protrusions, overbuilding of the Schwabach, which is now piped
  • two gate posts, 18th century, instead of the medieval wall gate (Nürnberger Pforte)

File number: D-5-71-165-1.

Water pipe

The aqueduct in Heilsbronn's old town consists of piped watercourses, some of which run in vaults made of stone blocks. It is a construction of the Middle Ages with pipes of the Renaissance and the 18th century in three types: brick gutters sealed with clay, hollowed out tree trunks, lead pipes, in the area of the walled city. Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
