Ensembles

Ornbau old town ensemble

Ornbau: Unteres Tor, Altmühlbrücke and cath. Parish church

The ensemble includes the heavily fortified medieval dwarf town of Ornbau an der Altmühl , formerly the center of the episcopal-Eichstättischen exclave Ornbau-Arberg, seat of a Eichstättischen Oberamt and one of the four Eichstättischen main customs stations. The city plan is similar in outline, two-door structure and lane scheme to that of the neighboring cities Wolframs-Eschenbach and Windsbach and, like them, should go back to the 13th century, the time when the first strong fortification ring of the Counts of Öttingen, who acted as patrons, was under imperial orders in Ornbau had to be destroyed again. The existing fortification ring comes from the second half of the 15th century. The original town plan with its market-like wide, curved main street leading from gate to gate and the two loosely built side streets on the back of the deep plots of the main street (Klosterstraße, formerly Kirchgasse) was closed after a fire in 1633 by the imposing expansion of Kirchgasse on the eaves side transformed into a street triangle in the city center, now known as the “old town”. On the old main street, too, the original gable-side buildings were largely changed on the eaves side in the 18th century. The street scene is determined by broad, two-storey plastered hipped roof buildings, predominantly from the 18th century. Belonging to the city is the Altmühl area in front of the mighty river front of the city fortifications with the arched four-arch Altmühlbrücke in front of the lower gate tower and the group of buildings of the former tanner mill. In 1966/67, the town's parish church, which had previously dominated its silhouette, was replaced by a new building made of glass and concrete, as well as by some new buildings. File number: E-5-71-189-1.

City fortifications with kennels

The first fortification was built around 1286. The bishops of Eichstätt had the second fortification built after 1317. Prince-Bishop Wilhelm von Reichenau had the third fortification expanded from 1464 on the basis of the 13th and 14th centuries and restored in the 18th century. The city fortifications of Ornbau in their current form include walls, kennels, archways and bastions made of quarry and quarry stone.

  • Wall section on the west side up to the upper gate, with lower bastion, upper bastion and so-called castle protruding over the kennel into the moat, largely preserved including the lining wall
  • Former upper gate castle and barbican in the area of the old town 1, 2, 3, 4, as well as the lower gate, old town 23
  • Unobstructed wall line on the eastern front with the so-called begging tower and wall breakthrough with the so-called begging footbridge, between Altstadt 4 and Hammerweg 10
  • Zwinger on the eastern front, wall section on the southern front between the White Tower (at Bischof-Gundekar-Str. 5) and the former bastion in front of it (Hammergasse 10), and from the lower gate to the corner tower at Klosterstrasse 7

File number: D-5-71-189-1.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
