List of architectural monuments in Merkendorf (Middle Franconia)
The monuments of the Middle Franconian town of Merkendorf are compiled on this page . This table is a partial list of the list of architectural monuments in Bavaria . The basis is the Bavarian Monument List , which was first drawn up on the basis of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act of October 1, 1973 and has since been managed by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . The following information does not replace the legally binding information from the monument protection authority. This list reflects the update status from October 7, 2014 and contains 60 architectural monuments.
Ensembles
Merkendorf old town ensemble
The old town Merkendorf ( Lage ) ensemble comprises the walled late medieval town complex, which was decisively shaped in the 15th century as the city of Heilsbronn monastery and the administrative seat of the Altmühl provost's office. The city fortification with three gates and numerous smaller round and rectangular towers surrounds an almost rectangular area, which is traversed by an irregular network of alleys, which arises from less systematic urban architecture of the 15th century than from the developed pathways of earlier centuries and clearly an older town center around the church Reveals the upper gate and town hall. The Heilsbronn Monastery had systematically bought up all of the goods from various gentlemen since the 13th century.
At the market square in the center of the village, the main street running from the upper to the lower gate meets the Adlerstraße leading to the Taschentor. The most important buildings such as the late-Gothic old town hall, the former administrative building, the former tithe barn and an inn are located on the market square, effectively arranged in urban planning terms. The main and side streets of the city center show almost closed, gable and eaves-sided buildings with mostly plastered half-timbered parts, which were mostly restored over the late medieval core after severe destruction in the Thirty Years' War, mostly in the 17th and 18th centuries, evidence of the sedate arable bourgeois prosperity of the time after the secularization of the monastery state, in which Merkendorf was subordinate to a margrave-Ansbach city bailiff. In addition to the houses, the often stately barns assigned to them determine the street scene.
In the vicinity of the city wall there are partly single-storey craftsmen's and small farmhouses, often with a late medieval core, partly larger farms and extensive gardens.
War losses of the Second World War and the subsequent altered reconstruction of individual properties led to disruption of the site's appearance.
The suburb to the south, probably built in the 17th century, is largely built up. Otherwise, however, the encirclement of the city fortifications over long stretches in the west, south-west and south-east shows in a very original way the transition from the city fortifications, which are partially provided with water-filled ditches, to the flat land.

City fortifications
In 1398 the city received the right to fortify it from the Roman-German King Wenceslaus . The fortification ring was built up until the middle of the 15th century. The walls are made of broken stone and ashlar. File number: D-5-71-177-1. Starting at the Upper Gate, the city fortifications are divided into the following sections: the course of the curtain wall from the Upper Gate to the Pocket Gate with two rectangular towers with pointed helmets and a semicircular tower with a polygonal pointed roof

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
