Ensembles
Ensemble town center Markt Kastl
The ensemble ( location ) includes the monastery on a Jura rock ledge and the market at its feet. Kastl , mentioned in a document in 1103 as the oldest Benedictine settlement in the Bavarian northern district, founded by Margravine Luitgard, Count Berengar I von Sulzbach , Friedrich von Kastl-Habsberg and his son Otto, furnished with land and given it by Bishop Gebhard III. from Constance loaded with monks from the Hirsau reform monastery Petershausen , still stands like a medieval monastery castle above the Lauterach valley, which is famous for its natural beauty. The monastery church, consecrated in 1129, has retained its Romanesque and Gothic slightly expanded form because internal decline and the consequences of the Reformation led to the abolition of the monastery in 1563. Although this had a significant pre-Reformation past due to the Chancellor Reform, promoted under Abbot Otto Nortweiner (1378-1399), the granting of pontificals in 1374 and the elevation to the imperial class in 1413, it was not an independent Benedictine abbey again when the Upper Palatinate was re-catholicized It was handed over to the Jesuit College in Amberg in 1636 and to the Maltese as a branch in 1773/1782, so that the convent wings were also little used during the baroque period and were therefore only slightly redesigned, but not rebuilt. The former monastery, into which the regional court moved in 1825, the district court with rent office in 1862 and a Hungarian grammar school in 1958 and in which "the good Schweppermann is buried", is one of the most venerable facilities of its kind in the Upper Palatinate. His buildings still convey a picture of monastic life in the Middle Ages. Monastery and market form a grown unit, even if the buildings of the market are significantly younger due to being replaced several times and mostly belong to the 18th and 19th centuries. The development shows that the residents were mostly simple farmers or servants and that only the landlords and the millers on the Lauterach achieved a somewhat greater prosperity. The ground plan of the market depends on the geological conditions and is therefore diverse: the buildings surrounding the mountain spur in a semicircle on Hohenburger Strasse and Klosterbergstrasse are followed by expansions upstream into the Lauterach valley and the Haintal valley. In front of the town hall, an elongated square is cut out, which is usually lined with two-storey residential and inns. To the east, Hohenburger Strasse initially has rows of buildings on both sides. In the Haintal and on the Pfingstberg opposite, some of the houses push themselves close to the rocks. The market church is outside the center on Neumarkter Straße. There are still several residential buildings from the 18th century on Bräugasse. The market is bordered to the south by the Lauterach, on which many mill properties are lined up. File number: E-3-71-132-1.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
