The Schweppermannsburg (also called Pfaffenhofen Castle ) is a ruined castle in Kastl- Pfaffenhofen in the Upper Palatinate district of Amberg-Sulzbach , Bavaria ( Germany ).

The outer bailey of the Spornburg is freely accessible at all times, the main castle with the keep is not accessible.

Geographical location

The castle ruins are located directly east above Pfaffenhofen (about 16.5 kilometers southwest of Amberg ) on a mountain spur of the Pfarrberg ( 570.2 m above sea level ) that protrudes approximately to the northwest into the valley of the Lauterach ( 570.2  m above sea  level ) at 420  m above sea level. The construction period of the plant is undated. Excavations in 2004 showed extensive construction activities in the 13th century and few ceramic finds from the castle area indicate settlement activity as early as the 9th / 10th - 11th / 12th. Century. Pfaffenhofen is already part of the original equipment of the Kastl monastery and will probably have one until the 8th / 9th. Settlement continuity dating back to the 19th century. Pfaffenhofen Castle was first mentioned in the house contract of Pavia in 1329, when half of the complex went to the Duke of Bavaria, Ludwig the Bavarian .

From 1335 to 1352 Hartung der Schweppermann , a son of Seyfried Schweppermann , can be identified as the (partial) owner of the castle. At the end of the 14th century, Ulrich der Sweppermann finally appears as lord of the castle. The Schweppermann family is named for the castle in the following.

In the 17th century, the facility was destroyed by Swedish troops in the Thirty Years War and then poorly rebuilt. The castle complex fell into disrepair since the early 19th century and was only integrated into a renovation concept towards the end of the 20th century.

Since October 24, 2007 the castle has been owned by the chairman of the Amberg section of the German Alpine Club , who acquired it from the Free State of Bavaria .
