The listed Burgstall Schlössl , also known as the Old Castle , is located in the Schloßberg state forest about one kilometer west of the village of Sitzambuch , today a district of Schnaittenbach in the Amberg-Sulzbach district in Bavaria .
location
The Outbound medieval hilltop castle is not far on a pulpit-like projection below the height of the edge of a northern flank of the Schlossberg.
description
The Burgstall consists of a round, level square with a diameter of approx. 35 m. In its northern half it is protected by a steep mountain slope. In the southern half it is secured by a rampart and two deeper trenches . The edge wall is bent back on the west side and thus forms a gate for the former fortress, to which one has to climb from the inner ditch in a hollow alley. On the Burgplatz there are many pits that can be interpreted as traces of treasure graves, as legend has it that a fire-breathing dog is supposed to guard an immeasurably large treasure here. You can find remains of masonry as well as lumps of mortar and brick. The water supply was secured by a spring that rises in the southeast on the bottom of the trench and another 100 m to the west.
It is not known whether the castle stables were permanently inhabited as a noble residence or were only used as a refuge ( refuge ) in the event of war. The wall gate could also point to an origin in prehistoric times.
