Ensemble old town Wemding

File number: E-7-79-228-1

Nördlinger gate tower

The historical urban space of Wemding , as it is delimited by the entire system of the former city fortifications with a ditch between two surrounding lining walls and surrounding main wall, is an ensemble. Wemding, founding town in the 14th century, is a vivid example of the type of arable bourgeois settlement and has retained the character of a small medieval town in the exterior with its gates and towers, the dense and irregular gable roof landscape behind the still clearly visible, almost circular city wall .

The building stock within the fortifications, which are well preserved in the substructure, shows medieval gabled houses with baroque alterations, essentially late medieval gabled houses, with an irregular floor plan structure due to multiple axis shifts. Wemding lies on the slope of the hills that border the basin landscape of the sunken Ries basin in the east, at the intersection of two traffic arteries: the roads from Nördlingen to Monheim and from Harburg to Oettingen in Bavaria . A royal Meierhof , called 798, is the starting point of the settlement, located north of the church, then the later parish church itself and the houses adjoining to the north up to the Wettbach (Dosbach). The Meierhof area originally had its own wall ring, remains are in the Laberstrasse.

In the 11th and 12th centuries, the settlement expanded to the northwest on both sides of the Wettbach, south to the former Saumarkt (today the eastern section of Weißenbachstrasse), north to the former Schergengasse (today Wimpurggasse). The hospital, which was probably very old, but only attested to with certainty in the 14th century, was still outside the settlement at that time. The market square will be the new center , an expanded intersection of the traffic arteries. In the 13th century, the present-day old town was reached, the walling at the beginning of the 14th century already enclosed the entire city area.

In the northern semicircle of the city, the floor plan shows a strong orientation towards the course of the stream and noticeable irregularities, in the south-western and southern halves, however, planning features: Weber, Borken-, Lang- and Seelgasse encompass and run through regularly laid out quarters almost in a straight line. The central road cross cuts relatively axially through the urban area, which extends 537 meters from east to west, and 453 meters from north to south. Count Ludwig VI. von Oettingen granted the town town charter in 1318 and was also the first town lord.

Market place and market fountain

From the year the city was founded until 1340, the fortifications were built: the city moat, lined on both sides, the half-height chest wall attached to the inside of the moat, the Zwinger , the main wall with battlements , 30 towers and three gates with their own towers: Amerbacher Tor in the north, Kreuz- or Monheimer Tor in the east , Nördlinger Tor in the south. Of this city fortification, which was renewed in the 15th century, the wall towers except for three (baron tower, hay tower, torture tower), the gates except for the three gate towers and almost the entire battlement were laid down in the 19th century.

In 1467 the Oettinger sold the city to Duke Ludwig the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut , since 1503 it has been in the possession of the Bavarian main line, it remains so until 1803. During this period, Wemding, in accordance with its position as the administrative center of a curb-Bavarian rule, is occupied with a care court . This function promotes economic life; on the other hand, the situation as a curb-Bavarian exclave between the Margraviate of Ansbach, Pfalz-Neuburg and Oettingen has an unfavorable effect: all around customs abroad.

Up until the 20th century, Wemding remained an arable town with rural-oriented commercial operations, which is particularly clear in the northern part of the town, where agricultural properties bordered by walls and accessible through brick yard gates have a decisive influence on the streets and squares. But the arable and commercial character is also preserved in the other quarters. On the clearly uneven terrain of the city - almost entirely covered with cobblestones - the mostly two-storey, simple gabled buildings are grouped in an irregular axial alignment, often surrounded by small, fenced-in kitchen gardens. As a result of the strongly changing rows of houses, irregular triangular squares often arise, larger spaces alternate with extremely narrow spaces, and overall there are always new streets and squares in a narrow space. Most of the houses have a medieval core.

The current elevation, however, comes mainly from the modernization that had become necessary due to the effects of the Thirty Years War and the city fire of 1654. In addition to projections from the late Middle Ages on plastered or open half-timbered buildings, there are often two-storey plastered buildings with curved Baroque gables, the shape of which still belongs to the Renaissance, and the outside stairs with limestone cheeks as a particularly typical feature. The main and thoroughfares in particular have a representative design with stately volute or gable-top buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The area around the first core of the settlement is marked by large buildings to this day: In the formerly re-fortified area of the Fronhof, then the Großhof, the castle was rebuilt in 1614, and a little later the box building. The so-called New Castle was demolished in the 19th century or built into the women's convent.

City fortifications

File number: D-7-79-228-1

The city fortification is a well-preserved, oval, almost circular complex with a moat, kennel and main wall. Of the three former gate towers, the Nördlinger and Amerbacher Tor are still preserved, of the 33 former wall towers the Baron, Häutbach and Torture Tower are still preserved. The outer wall is almost completely preserved. The inner main wall was built over and partially demolished. Construction began in 1318 and the city fortifications were completed in the first half of the 14th century. In the 19th century it was partially demolished and built over.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
